Outside Harare, blueberry farms that barely existed a decade ago are now exporting forty times what they did in 2017 — some 12,000 tonnes this year, flown fresh to Asia and Europe. It's one sign of a broader shift: 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐛-𝐒𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚'𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬, 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 — 𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬, 𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐬, 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬 — 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭'𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲.
The logic is that modern horticulture is doing what factories were supposed to do. 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐝-𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐬, 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 and 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 make these operations look more like industrial plants than traditional farms — an "𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬." Fruit and nuts have overtaken cocoa as Africa's top agricultural export, reversing decades of colonial-era single-crop dependency.
The examples stack up. 𝐙𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐰𝐞'𝐬 𝐛𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 run on imported genetics and tunnel covers timed to hit the gap between US and Peruvian harvest seasons. 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐚 together supply roughly 8% of the world's cut flowers. Tropical fruit exports — avocados, mangoes, pineapples — have more than tripled continent-wide in ten years, the fastest growth of any region. And in May 2026, 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧 as the world's largest citrus exporter.
The spillovers resemble those long claimed for manufacturing: new agritech startups, dried-snack processing lines, cold-chain infrastructure repurposed for herbs and vegetables. But the constraints are familiar too — bad roads, clogged ports and in Ethiopia's case, flower lorries now facing armed bandits.
𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚'𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥 on African imports this year has opened a new market, though food-safety and plant-health rules remain a harder barrier than tariffs ever were.
𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐚 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 does in agriculture ($81bn a year versus $341bn). But Peru went from marginal blueberry exporter to global leader within a decade — proof the ceiling isn't fixed, if African policymakers back the sector with the same seriousness once reserved for industrial policy.
