A farmer walks through his field and notices a few insects feeding on the crop. The first thought may be — “Spray kar do.” But is every insect population actually a reason to spray? Not necessarily. This is where Economic Threshold Level (ETL) becomes an important concept in scientific crop protection. ETL is the pest population level at which control measures should be started to prevent the pest from reaching the point where it causes economically significant damage. In simple words — ETL helps us decide when action is necessary, instead of spraying simply because a pest is present. 👨🌾 How does ETL work in the field? • Regularly scout and monitor the crop • Identify the pest correctly • Count or estimate the pest population using a suitable sampling method • Compare the observed population with the recommended threshold • If the population approaches or reaches the threshold, take appropriate control measures • Continue monitoring after the intervention The important point is that ETL is not a universal number. It can vary depending on: 🌿 Crop and variety 🐛 Pest species 🌱 Crop growth stage 🌦️ Weather conditions 📍 Location and farming system 💰 Expected crop value and control cost For example, seeing a few caterpillars in a field does not automatically mean that the entire crop requires a pesticide application. The better approach is: Scout → Identify → Monitor → Compare with ETL → Decide → Act → Re-scout This approach can help reduce unnecessary pesticide applications, lower input costs, protect beneficial organisms and support more responsible crop protection. And one important distinction: ETL is the action point. EIL (Economic Injury Level) is the pest population at which the economic loss caused by the pest is equal to the cost of controlling it. 🌿 Smart crop protection is not about controlling every insect. It is about knowing which insect, how many, when to act and why. Observe first. Decide scientifically. Spray only when necessary. #NXT #Agriculture #ETL #day17 #EconomicThresholdLevel #CropProtection #IPM #PestManagement #FarmManagement #AgriTech #SustainableAgriculture #SmartFarming #AgricultureDevelopment

Renovating the Farm — Turning Available Biomass into Farm Resources 🌱♻️ This video was recorded in January 2026 at the BioFarm site in Gazipur, Bangladesh. The lemon orchard is currently undergoing renovation and cleaning, as part of the preparation for the next phase of the project. One of the things I am particularly interested in is how we can make use of resources that are already available on the farm instead of treating them as waste. 🌿 Water hyacinth (Kochuri Pana) is being collected and used as organic mulch in the orchard. 💧 The irrigation system is also being renovated, with the aim of developing a more efficient water-management system for the orchard and other production areas. 🌾 You can also see long grass growing around the site. This grass has a good local value—around ৳60 per bundle. Instead of immediately removing it, my plan is to: Harvest → dry → use as mulch → sell surplus or reuse on-site. The green wild grasses will be handled differently. They will be chopped and incorporated into a plant-based biological composting system, turning naturally available vegetation into a useful farm input. This is part of the approach I want to develop at BioFarm: Observe what the farm already has → understand its value → process it appropriately → return it to the production system. The lemon orchard renovation is only one part of the larger 6-acre integrated agriculture and aquaculture R&D project. The site is being developed to explore practical systems combining: 🌱 Sustainable crop production 🍋 Lemon orchard management 🐟 Aquaculture 🦐 Raceway-based aquaculture research 🌱 Nursery & protected cultivation 🐔 Poultry & 🐐 goat production 🧪 Biological agricultural inputs ♻️ Biomass recycling and circular farm systems 💧 Efficient irrigation and water management 🌿 KNF & JADAM-inspired regenerative farming I see the farm not simply as a production unit, but as a living R&D environment where we can develop, test, observe, adapt and demonstrate practical farming systems under local conditions. There is still a lot of renovation and experimentation ahead. I will continue documenting the process—including the problems, experiments, failures, improvements and results. 📍 BioFarm | Gazipur, Bangladesh Regenerate resources. Improve the system. Learn from the field. 🌱 #BioFarm #AgriTech #SustainableAgriculture #RegenerativeAgriculture #AgricultureRAndD #NaturalFarming #KNF #JADAM #SoilHealth #BiologicalInputs #IntegratedFarming #CircularAgriculture #Aquaculture #BangladeshAgriculture
