🍅 YOLOv8 for Tomato Leaf Disease Detection
In many African countries, tomato is not just food — it’s livelihood, employment, and a major source of income for millions of smallholder farmers. Yet up to 40% of tomato harvests are lost every year due to late detection of crop diseases.
But this doesn’t have to continue.
Today, we highlight a groundbreaking research study demonstrating how AI can dramatically improve disease detection in tomato plants, helping farmers take action earlier and reduce losses before they spread.
Researchers developed a lightweight YOLOv8 deep-learning model capable of identifying multiple tomato leaf diseases — such as early blight, late blight, mosaic virus, and bacterial spot — in real time with high accuracy.
