Tackling India’s biggest nature challenges means tackling a food system that drives farmers to overapply fossil-based fertilisers, toxic pesticides, and water, with all the associated GHG emissions and downstream pollution of soils and rivers. While the country’s overall food security goals might be met (just about), smallholder fermers struggle to make ends meet with yields around half the global average and growing climate risk. 🌾 AgroStar is transformative not because they’ve invented the next breakthrough ag input, but because they’ve done something that is perhaps even harder - build networks of access and trust with millions of smallholder farmers so they can transition confidently to a more sustainable system. With their free agronomic advice service and online and offline retail channels, AgroStar helps them access high quality seeds and inputs (that lean biological and more selective) at fair prices - and the results from independent surveys we commissioned showed large drops in chemical and water use alongside significantly higher yields and profitability. Importantly, their model doesn’t requires carbon credits or green premiums from buyers; farmers take their own decisions on how far to move along the regenerative spectrum as clients of AgroStar, not beneficiaries, and reap the benefits in higher incomes and healthier lives.
