Nvidia just bought Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Here's why smallholder farmers should care. The AI quietly transforming African agriculture, crop disease detection from a phone photo, yield prediction from satellite imagery, credit scoring for farmers with no bank statements, mostly runs on open-source models. Models a small team can download, fine-tune on local crops and local data, and deploy without a Silicon Valley budget. Hugging Face was the front door to all of that. Now the world's biggest chipmaker owns it. Maybe nothing changes. Nvidia profits when more people build. But agriculture in emerging markets has learned this lesson before with seeds and fertilizer: when the inputs get consolidated, the smallest players pay the price. For those of us building AI for smallholder finance, the takeaway is clear: Fine-tune and own your models. A crop-yield model trained on Ethiopian teff or Kenyan maize is an asset no acquisition can take from you. The real moat was never the base model, it's the local data and the trust of the farmers behind it. The next decade of agricultural AI in Africa shouldn't depend on decisions made in a boardroom in Santa Clara. #AgriTech #AI #FinancialInclusion #Smallholders #Africa #AgriFinance

From #Sapporo with love. Just wrapped up an inspiring panel at #ShakeH, moderated by Max Gurvits, with Kitano-san (representing Sapporo's GX Finance Special Zone) and Alessandro Monticelli from Green Independence to discuss how European innovation can intersect with Japan's ambitious green and agricultural goals. 🌍 During the session, I shared a few key observations from my perspective as an investor and ecosystem builder: 🌱 The Japanese Agrifoodtech Opportunity: Like Italy, Japan has historically been a laggard in building its agrifood-tech ecosystem. At Big Idea Ventures, we’ve mapped only about 200 agrifood startups here, a relatively small number for the world's 3rd largest economy. However, the timing is actually perfect. With global investments in agrifood startups contracting by almost 80% since 2021, #Japan is entering the market exactly when there is the greatest opportunity to make an impact while other countries reassess. With Roma Startup, the association I've co-founded together with Gianmarco Carnovale, this is precisely the kind of ecosystem opportunity that we see for Italy to catch up. 🚜 In tis, we see massive potential in Hokkaido given its central role as Japan's agricultural heartland. We discussed how European agritech are already making waves. For instance, evja’s precision agriculture technology is already being deployed in Asia, proving that data-driven farming fits perfectly into Hokkaido’s broader Green Transformation story. 🌉 Making Cross-Border Collaboration Work: Through incentives and subsidies, local authorities in Hokkaido are laying fantastic groundwork to facilitate the entry of foreign startups. But my biggest piece of advice to European founders? You must enter this market in a very structured way. Japan offers a massive market opportunity, but it must be taken seriously and approached with respect for local business dynamics. A huge thank you to the organizers at Shake H for facilitating such a forward-thinking event. The bridge between European innovation, Hokkaido’s resources, and Sapporo’s policy framework is being built right now, and it is a highly credible, exciting partnership opportunity. Looking forward to continuing the conversation and helping more startups scale across borders! 🚀 Andrew D Ive Björn Lapakko Kentaro Morita Antonio Iannone Gianmarco Carnovale Laura Liisa Lemetsar Sera Tsutsumi Stephane Gantchev Raph Crouan Srdjan Kovacevic #ShakeH #Hokkaido #GreenTransformation #GX #Agrifoodtech #VentureCapital #BigIdeaVentures #Startups #CrossBorder #Innovation #Sapporo #Agriculture

Hello connection Today, I’m proud to shine a spotlight on one of our remarkable alumni, Aruneshwar MGB, whose professional journey embodies innovation, purpose, and leadership. Aruneshwar graduated from our institution and went on to become the Founder & CEO of Grow Your Farms Pvt. Ltd., a visionary AgriTech enterprise that is transforming the agricultural landscape in India. His story is a powerful reminder of how an entrepreneurial mindset and commitment to impact can redefine entire sectors. LinkedIn +1 At the heart of Aruneshwar’s vision is a bold mission: to empower 10 million farmers by 2030. This ambitious goal goes beyond business growth — it’s about creating economic opportunities, enhancing farm productivity, and connecting rural communities with modern marketplaces. Through a direct-to-farmers platform, Grow Your Farms facilitates fairer access to markets, improved price discovery, and better livelihood outcomes for farmers, reinforcing the importance of inclusive innovation. LinkedIn Aruneshwar recently returned to campus as a guest speaker at the “Journey to the C-Suite” session organised by Adithya School of Business Management (ASBM). There, he shared invaluable insights on leadership, business strategy, and the power of purpose-driven work with current students. His willingness to engage with and mentor the next generation reflects a deep commitment to giving back to the community that shaped his early career. LinkedIn What makes Aruneshwar’s journey truly inspiring is his ability to blend entrepreneurial grit with social impact. Instead of pursuing success in isolation, he chose a path that uplifts others — especially those at the grassroots of our agricultural economy. His story encourages us all to think bigger, act boldly, and strive for impact that transcends individual achievement. #AlumniSpotlight #ProudAlumni #Entrepreneurship #AgriTech #Leadership #SocialImpact #Innovation #FarmersFirst #Inspiration

Modern Agriculture Isn’t the Future — It’s Already Here. We used to call it “smart farming.” Now it’s simply competitive farming. From drones in the sky to sensors beneath the soil, agriculture has quietly become one of the most technology-integrated industries in the world. Today’s high-performance farms are leveraging: Drones — crop health mapping, precision spraying, early pest detection Precision Planters — optimized spacing, higher germination efficiency Soil Sensors — real-time nutrient & moisture intelligence Variable Rate Technology (VRT) — input optimization by micro-zone Robotic Weeders — reduced chemical dependence Crop Monitoring Apps — centralized farm analytics Automated Irrigation — water efficiency at scale Climate Stations — predictive crop planning GPS-Guided Machinery — lower overlap, fuel savings, accuracy But this shift isn’t about gadgets. It’s about margins. The farms adopting integrated AgriTech ecosystems are seeing: ✔ Higher yield per acre ✔ Reduced fertilizer & pesticide waste ✔ Lower labor volatility ✔ Stronger environmental compliance ✔ Data-backed ROI improvement The real transformation? Agriculture is moving from experience-driven intuition to precision-driven intelligence. And in a world of volatile climate, input inflation, and tightening regulations — data is no longer optional. It’s a competitive moat. The question isn’t: “Should we adopt AgriTech?” It’s: “How fast can we integrate before our competitors do?” If you're in: 🌾 Commercial farming 📈 Agribusiness investment 💻 AgriTech innovation 🌍 Sustainability strategy 🏦 Agricultural finance This shift directly reshapes your long-term playbook. 💬 Which of these technologies delivers the fastest ROI in your view — Drones, VRT, Automation, or AI-based analytics? 🔁 Repost to spark a serious AgriTech conversation. #AgriTech #PrecisionFarming #SustainableAgriculture #FarmInnovation #DigitalTransformation #AgriBusiness #FutureOfFarming #SmartFarming #ClimateResilience #ROI

AgriFoodTech venture capital firm The Yield Lab LATAM has announced an investment in IncluirTec, an Agri-Fintech-as-a-Service platform focused on expanding financial access for smallholder farmers across rural Latin America. The investment will support IncluirTec’s efforts to help financial institutions strengthen rural lending through digital tools, agronomic intelligence, and alternative risk assessment models. The company’s platform reportedly reduces loan processing timelines from around 25 days to three days or less and maintains a 97% on-time repayment rate across a $200 million portfolio. ANGÉLICA ACOSTA QUIROGA, Co-founder and CEO of IncluirTec, said the investment accelerates the company’s mission to transform agricultural finance by combining advanced technology with agronomic expertise to expand credit access, strengthen food security, and build climate resilience across rural communities. Operating in four countries and partnering with 18 financial institutions, IncluirTec has processed more than 35,000 loan applications across 556 municipalities in Colombia, with approximately 30% of applicants representing women-led rural enterprises. Its proprietary alternative scoring model evaluates productive capacity, economic behavior, and open-data signals beyond traditional credit scoring frameworks. Santiago Murtagh, Managing Partner at The Yield Lab Latam, said the company’s strong repayment performance demonstrates how technology-driven risk models can unlock scalable and sustainable agricultural finance in underserved sectors. As IncluirTec expands across the region, its long-term impact will likely depend on adapting its digital credit model to varying regulatory systems, agricultural structures, and climate risk profiles across Latin America.
