Nvidia just bought Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Here's why smallholder farmers should care. The AI quietly transforming African agriculture, crop disease detection from a phone photo, yield prediction from satellite imagery, credit scoring for farmers with no bank statements, mostly runs on open-source models. Models a small team can download, fine-tune on local crops and local data, and deploy without a Silicon Valley budget. Hugging Face was the front door to all of that. Now the world's biggest chipmaker owns it. Maybe nothing changes. Nvidia profits when more people build. But agriculture in emerging markets has learned this lesson before with seeds and fertilizer: when the inputs get consolidated, the smallest players pay the price. For those of us building AI for smallholder finance, the takeaway is clear: Fine-tune and own your models. A crop-yield model trained on Ethiopian teff or Kenyan maize is an asset no acquisition can take from you. The real moat was never the base model, it's the local data and the trust of the farmers behind it. The next decade of agricultural AI in Africa shouldn't depend on decisions made in a boardroom in Santa Clara. #AgriTech #AI #FinancialInclusion #Smallholders #Africa #AgriFinance

🎉 Breakthrough in AI-based nematode identification 🪱 While some nematode species contribute positively to soil health, harmful nematodes are reported to cause dozens of billions of euros in damages yearly to growers all over the world 👩‍🌾 Accurate identification is crucial, but identifying nematodes is costly and requires a great deal of expertise. 𝐀𝐧 𝐀𝐈 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 🔬 That is why researchers at Wageningen University & Research are contributing to the development of an AI-based identification system for nematodes. A first milestone has been achieved: the AI system can now independently recognize the root-knot nematode 𝘔𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘰𝘨𝘺𝘯𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘸𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘪 through a microscope (Nemascope) with 96% accuracy 🙌 Its performance matched that of an experienced taxonomic nematologist. 𝘔𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘰𝘨𝘺𝘯𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘸𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘪 is one of the most difficult nematodes to identify. So when the agritech company Veridi Technologies BV approached WUR with the idea of developing an AI-based identification system, it was an obvious place to start. “If it works for such a difficult species, it should also work for species that are easier to distinguish,” says researcher Leendert Molendijk. Researcher Pella Brinkman explains the role WUR played in supplying input for the AI system. “We provided nematodes from our cultures and identified them accurately. This is essential for training the AI model on large numbers of images. We also carried out validation checks to assess reliability.” When the system made mistakes, the team helped analysing possible causes and advised on what morphological features the AI should focus on to improve the identification accuracy. 🌎 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 The results demonstrate that AI could become a valuable tool for nematode identification. Molendijk: “If we can apply it to other nematode species, it could have a significant impact worldwide.” This is particularly relevant in regions where taxonomic expertise and advisory services are scarce. Providing farmers all over the world with access to an affordable identification system could improve understanding of soil health, leading to better yields, and less reliance on nematicides. 💡 What are your thoughts on this breakthrough? 📈🌍 #CMS #B2BSales #ROI #Sustainability #AgriTech #Bioplastics #AgriculturalEngineering #BusinessDevelopment #AngelYeast We often hear that "sustainability" and green solutions come at a high cost for companies... but through analyzing the B2B market, I can tell you that this equation changes completely when you choose the right raw material. 💡 Yesterday, I talked about CMS (Condensed Molasses Fermentation Solution) as a "strategic treasure." Today, I want to focus on the point that matters most to anyone running a business or seeking operational efficiency: Return on Investment (ROI). Clients in the agricultural or industrial sectors aren't just looking for an eco-friendly product; they are looking for a solution that reduces costs and maximizes production. This is exactly where the power of CMS shines through three key points: 1️⃣ Cost Reduction: Being a highly nutrient-rich product that offers a strong value for money, relying on CMS significantly cuts down the heavy bills of expensive chemical inputs. 2️⃣ Yield Optimization: In national agricultural mega-projects and large-scale farming, CMS directly improves soil quality, which immediately translates into higher numbers and larger harvest volumes. 3️⃣ Industrial Edge: Its application in manufacturing bioplastics provides companies with a sustainable alternative with highly competitive production costs. Furthermore, it can be integrated into many different industries and diverse applications. The bottom line: True sustainability is a win for the environment, and a win for the Business at the same time! 📈🌍 #CMS #B2BSales #ROI #Sustainability #AgriTech #Bioplastics #AgriculturalEngineering #BusinessDevelopment #AngelYeast
