Nvidia just bought Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Here's why smallholder farmers should care. The AI quietly transforming African agriculture, crop disease detection from a phone photo, yield prediction from satellite imagery, credit scoring for farmers with no bank statements, mostly runs on open-source models. Models a small team can download, fine-tune on local crops and local data, and deploy without a Silicon Valley budget. Hugging Face was the front door to all of that. Now the world's biggest chipmaker owns it. Maybe nothing changes. Nvidia profits when more people build. But agriculture in emerging markets has learned this lesson before with seeds and fertilizer: when the inputs get consolidated, the smallest players pay the price. For those of us building AI for smallholder finance, the takeaway is clear: Fine-tune and own your models. A crop-yield model trained on Ethiopian teff or Kenyan maize is an asset no acquisition can take from you. The real moat was never the base model, it's the local data and the trust of the farmers behind it. The next decade of agricultural AI in Africa shouldn't depend on decisions made in a boardroom in Santa Clara. #AgriTech #AI #FinancialInclusion #Smallholders #Africa #AgriFinance

okay so I need to brag about my friend for a sec, Alexander R. (CEO @ Vocify AB) literally gave machines a nose. This is definitely one of those "my friend is better than your friend" situations 😤 Vocify built an AI electronic nose that can can smell cancer, Food contamination, Fentanyl, Explosives. But wait! It doesn't end there! It can also smell in agritech, plantation industry, live stock diseases and forestry applications, and they already achieved 90%+ accuracy! like... how is this even real?! I'm sitting here thinking I'm doing cool stuff and then Alexander casually explains his machines can SMELL. Jokes aside, Alexander R. is one of the most kindhearted and empathetic human beings I have ever met. Definitely follow him and Vocify AB because they are really doing something amazing for the world. The applications for this E-nose are endless. They could improve the life of millions and potentially even save lives! What you're doing is amazing Alexander and keep on being the inspiring human being you are! ❤️ #Stockholm #Founders #DeepTech #AI #Vocify

🔦 Spotlight On: Fawad Sheikh - Terahertz Frequencies: A New Frontier in 24/7 Soil Sensing (Initial Results) We’re excited to share Fawad Sheikh’s breakthrough THz sensing work from Universität Duisburg-Essen! Using a THz-VNA setup, his team tracks real-time plant health + soil moisture dynamics, including clay soil swelling when irrigated to understand irrigation needs of crops 🌾. What he did (in plain terms) 〰️ Scanned clay soils (new vs. aged) at 275–325 GHz (center 300 GHz) 💧 Added water and monitored the swelling, look-through changes, & moisture migration over a 24-hour period ⏱️ 💧 Introduced two moisture levels and compared new vs. old clay soil varieties to figure out how water moves in clay soil 🌊 📡 Scanned 25 positions inside a soil container to map variations across space and time 🔎 Key finding: Moisture triggers stronger attenuation + signal fluctuations due to swelling & uneven water distribution, revealing soil structure & water flow paths Why this is promising ▪️ Continuous root-soil monitoring → precision irrigation and water savings ▪️ Soil swelling quantification → understand compaction/expansion effects ▪️ Non-destructive THz probing beats X-ray/CT → no radiation risks! 🩻 ▪️ Enables smart farming: optimize watering, track plant health 🌾, map soil physics His next steps will be to collect additional data and publish full results, enabling deeper interpretation and better adaptation to concrete applications in sustainable agriculture!
