Something I witnessed at our campus recently genuinely left me thinking for days. SKUAST-Kashmir's Shalimar campus is now home to one of the most advanced IoT-Based Fertigation Systems in the country — and as a Horticulture student here, being able to walk through this facility felt like a privilege that not many get. The foundation stone was laid on 5th December 2024 by @Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, in the presence of our Vice-Chancellor @Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai and Director Planning @Prof. Haroon Rashid Naik. That itself tells you the scale of what is being built here. Photos show: The Main Control Room — a remarkably designed building that houses the entire nerve centre of the system. The Netafim sand media filters handle precision filtration of irrigation water before it ever reaches the crop. The GrowSphere MAX, Netafim's flagship irrigation and fertigation controller, automates water and nutrient delivery using IoT, cloud computing, and real-time agronomic data. Large IBC tanks hold nutrient solutions ready to be delivered with precision. The live GIS-integrated dashboard shows field blocks, soil sensor nodes, hydrant valves, and full weather parameters — temperature, soil moisture, dew point, wet bulb and wind direction — all in real time over a satellite map of the Shalimar campus. It also tracks fertilizer application schedules, pest pressure indices, and microclimate data, giving farm managers a complete picture of what is happening across every block without stepping into the field. One photo shows a worker manually cleaning the inline disc filters attached to the tanks. This is routine but critical maintenance — these small filters are the last line of defence before water and nutrients enter the drip lines. If they clog, pressure drops, emitters fail, and the precision the entire system is built on breaks down. Even in a fully automated IoT system, this kind of hands-on upkeep is what keeps everything running correctly. It is a reminder that technology and human attention work together, not separately. This is part of the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP), a major government initiative to modernise Kashmiri agriculture, particularly for apple orchards and high-value temperate crops. SKUAST-K has also established a Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning dedicated to smart fertigation, orchard monitoring, and crop disease management. What strikes me most as a student is how rapidly our field is evolving. Horticulture is no longer just about soil and seasons. It is sensors, data, automation, and remote control. The gap between the textbook and the technology is closing — and it is closing right here, in Kashmir. Grateful to be studying at an institution that is not just teaching agriculture but actively building its future. 🌱 DECODE SIH 2026 – Bengaluru Grand Finale 🏆 What an incredible experience at the DECODE SIH 2026 Bengaluru Grand Finale, organized by OSCode at Cambridge Institute of Technology, Bengaluru! 🚀 Our team, Tech Avengers, had the wonderful opportunity to build and present FarmSight, an AI-powered decision intelligence platform for smarter and more sustainable farming. 🌾🤖 What started as an idea gradually transformed into a working solution through countless discussions, iterations, debugging sessions, challenges, and last-minute improvements. This journey taught us that building a real-world solution is not just about technology—it is about understanding the problem, listening to feedback, working as a team, and continuously improving. A special and heartfelt thank you to our mentor, Jatin Chugh sir, for his constant guidance and valuable feedback throughout our FarmSight journey. His suggestions helped us look at our project from different perspectives and make it more practical and meaningful. 🙏 One of the most memorable moments of this journey was seeing Tech Avengers recognized as a Render Track Winner, receiving $600 in Render Credits! 🏆🎉 Beyond the recognition, the biggest takeaway for us was the experience itself—the opportunity to learn, experiment, fail, improve, and finally stand together to present something we built as a team. At the beginning of the year, I sat down to build a business model, feeling fairly confident I knew what I was doing. I was wrong about what I was actually being asked for. Nimbus Agri-Tech Ltd, an agri-tech start-up, were building a robotic system to help farmers manage weeds using living mulch. My job at the UK Agri-Tech Centre: help them understand the commercial opportunity. So I did what any modeller would do - market size, customers, pricing, adoption rates, revenue projections. Standard stuff. Except somewhere in that process, I realised I'd missed the point entirely. I wrote the full story here.
