Hack for Humanity Harare 2026 — what a day!
Yesterday, 22 hackers, five teams, mentors, astute judges and ecosystem partners gathered in Harare for the The AI Collective Hack for Humanity Hackathons 2026, in collaboration with Major League Hacking (MLH) and supported by Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries amongst many other stakeholders. Amid a highly competitive field of teams and compelling innovations, our team secured 2nd place.
The mandate was simple, but the execution was not: What does humanity need next, and what can we build to help?
Under the Best Use of the Google Gemini API challenge, we had one day to move from problem identification to research, architecture, development, testing, documentation and a live demonstration.
I am deeply honoured that our work on MundaAI emerged with 2nd Prize, just one point away from 1st, in a field of fascinating solutions including PocketLedger, Funda AI, GeoAgriSense and Zimbabwe Nursing Tutor.
MundaAI is an AI-powered agricultural intelligence and decision-support platform designed around a fundamental question: how do we make useful agricultural intelligence more accessible to the farmer? built around Gemini and multimodal AI, MundaAI explores the convergence of crop-image analysis, agricultural knowledge, weather intelligence, market intelligence, farm context and specialised tools, with WhatsApp providing an accessible interface for agricultural support.
The idea is not simply to give farmers more information.
It is to help them understand their situation, interpret relevant intelligence and determine what to do next.
Farai Masotsha and I took our boots onto the podium to present and defend the system, with the wider work supported by our team of five astute developers, each contributing to the build in their own capacity.
What impressed me most about the day was the seriousness of the builders. Different ideas, different approaches, different levels of experience, but one shared willingness to build under pressure and solve problems that matter.
One day produced a prototype. One point separated us from first place but the real measure of MundaAI will be what we build beyond the hackathon.
My sincere appreciation to AI Collective Zimbabwe, Major League Hacking, CZI, Econet Wireless, our judges, mentors, partners and organising team Christine Chitongo, Munenyasha Hove and Anesu Ndachengedzwa.
The future of African innovation will not be built by waiting for perfect conditions.
It will be built by identifying real problems, applying serious engineering, and having the courage to begin. Build what humanity needs next!
