Six Questions Every AgriTech Board Should Be Asking I Issue #3 We often talk about AgriTech innovation in terms of technology. AI. Drones. IoT. Satellites. Robotics. Biotechnology. But technology is only one part of the equation. If we want AgriTech businesses to create lasting value, the more important questions may be the ones we don't ask often enough. 1. Do we understand the farmer's real problem? Farmers don't necessarily buy technology because it is technically superior. They buy time, income, productivity, convenience and reduced risk. The question isn't just “What does our technology do?” It is “What meaningful difference does it make to the farmer's life or livelihood?” 2. Can we quantify the economic value? A better yield is useful. Reduced input costs are useful. But can the farmer actually see the improvement in their bottom line? If the economic benefit cannot be demonstrated, adoption becomes much harder. 3. Does the market understand the problem being solved? Some agricultural problems are significant but largely invisible to the customer. Sometimes the challenge isn't creating the solution. It's creating awareness of the problem first. 4. Are we competing in an existing market or creating a new one? The strongest AgriTech businesses may not simply compete on price or features. They may redefine the value proposition altogether - from selling a product to selling productivity, resilience, sustainability or better outcomes. 5. Can our governance keep pace with our growth? Rapid growth can create enormous pressure on systems, controls and decision-making. The lesson from cases such as eFishery is important - innovation and growth cannot substitute for accountability, transparency and strong internal controls. Governance cannot be something we build after we scale. 6. Is the infrastructure actually ready for deployment? A technology can work perfectly in a controlled environment and still struggle in the field. Connectivity, devices, affordability, digital literacy, logistics and local support can determine whether innovation reaches the farmer. The last mile can be as important as the technology itself. These six questions point to something fundamental - AgriTech success is not simply about building better technology. It is about understanding farmers, economics, markets, infrastructure, risk and governance and how they interact. #AgriTech #AgTech #Agriculture #Governance #Investment #BoardEffectiveness #FarmerCentricInnovation

Road to GIW 2026: Webinar 1 Recap What does it take to move from an AI idea to a solution that actually works for agriculture? That was at the centre of our first Road to Gusii Innovation Week 2026 webinar, delivered in collaboration with GDG Kisii as part of the build-up to the AgriTech AI Hackathon. The session, AI for Agribusiness: AI Basics, Data Use & UX, took participants beyond simply thinking about AI as ChatGPT. We explored how different AI approaches can respond to practical agribusiness needs, from crop disease detection and yield prediction to demand forecasting, market intelligence and decision support. A key part of the discussion was data: understanding the farm, climate, market, remote-sensing and business data available to innovators, and importantly, assessing its accuracy, relevance, accessibility and appropriate use before building with it. We then connected this to the journey from data to a working model defining the problem, preparing the right data, building and testing a model, and using its outputs to support real decisions. But technology alone is not enough. The session also emphasized designing for the actual user and environment: understanding the problem first, considering realities such as unreliable connectivity and different devices, and continuously testing solutions with users. The key takeaway: start with the problem, understand the user and the data, then determine where AI can create real value. This is only the beginning of the Road to GIW 2026 as we prepare innovators to move from ideas to practical, market-ready solutions. #GusiiInnovationWeek2026 #RoadToGIW2026 #AgriTech #AI #Agribusiness #Innovation #FieLabs #GDGKisii

FarmScout

linkedin

FarmScout has entered the due diligence process with The Idea Company. A farmer rarely loses a crop for lack of effort. They lose it because the answer came late — by the time a disease is visible across the whole field, the cheap window to act has already closed. FarmScout is built for that window. Point your phone at a leaf. The app finds the leaf, names the disease, and tells you what to spray, how much, and when to check again — in English, Telugu and other languages. All of it runs on the phone itself. No internet — because the field doesn't have any. What we're taking into diligence: → Two months in the field — around 200 farmers, 5 agri-input dealers, and a symptom set reviewed with agronomy and data-science experts before a single label was trusted → A leaf detector plus one trained disease model per crop, across 10 crops, running fully offline on an ordinary phone → Models trained on our own field-collected dataset, verified through a four-stage review — collected, not scraped → A row-by-row field map, so the answer is where to act, not just what is wrong Thank you Anantraj Baghel and the team at The Idea Company for engaging with this seriously, and for questions that have already made the product sharper. Now the part that actually counts: real farmers, real fields, real proof. #FarmScout #AgriTech #Telangana #AI #IndianStartups #DueDiligence

I have been spending time with an agritech company recently that changed how I think about where value in agriculture is heading. The model is not complicated to describe. Using satellite data, soil intelligence, and localised crop analytics, they can tell a farmer exactly what seed variety suits a specific plot, how much water and fertiliser is needed at a micro level, and when to intervene before a problem compounds. A precision dispensing tool delivers inputs at the quantities the data recommends. The result is lower input cost, less waste, and better yield. The economics work for the farmer. The sustainability case is real. But the more interesting shift is not the technology. It is what the technology is selling. Agritech for most of its history has been an input business. Better seeds. Better fertiliser. Better equipment. The value proposition was product quality. The farmer bought a better version of what they were already buying. What is emerging now is different. The value is in the decision, not the input. How much fertiliser, applied where, at what stage of the crop cycle, under what soil conditions, matters more than which fertiliser. A precise recommendation, grounded in satellite and soil data at the plot level, is worth more than a marginally better product applied at the wrong quantity or time. That shift has implications for how agritech companies build their businesses. A product business scales by selling more units. A decision business scales by being trusted with more decisions. Those are different commercial models, different customer relationships, and different competitive positions. The companies building toward the decision model are accumulating something more durable than market share. They are accumulating data, trust, and hyper-local intelligence that compounds over time. A platform that has tracked soil conditions, crop performance, and input outcomes across thousands of plots over multiple seasons has an asset that a new entrant cannot replicate quickly. In India, this is moving faster than most urban observers appreciate. State-level initiatives, farmer producer organisations, and a growing number of well-funded platforms are already operating at this level of localisation. The question now is which models will build farmer trust and data depth required to make those decisions consistently better than the alternative. The analogy I keep returning to is wealth management. For decades, financial advisory was a product distribution business. The shift to evidence-based, dynamic, personalised advice changed the value proposition. Agritech is at an earlier stage of the same transition. The farmers who benefit most will be those whose advisors, human or digital, know their specific land better than any generic input recommendation ever could. That is a different kind of agritech company. And the ones building toward it are worth paying attention to.

I’m happy to share that I’ve successfully completed the 2026 Summer InnovEgypt program! 🎓 Over 6 days and 45 intensive training hours, I had the opportunity to learn more about innovation, entrepreneurship, and turning problems into real solutions. One of the highlights of the program was working with my team on AgriAI Rover, an agricultural support system that combines an AI-powered platform with a future AI-enabled field rover. Our idea aims to help farmers detect unusual crop problems early through images and field observations, while connecting them with trusted agricultural engineers who can verify AI-generated suggestions and provide professional guidance. What I especially liked about the project was that we didn't want AI to replace the agricultural expert or take the decision away from the farmer. Instead, AI helps collect and analyze information, while the expert provides validation and the farmer remains in control. I’m grateful for this experience, my teammates, and everyone who contributed to making these 6 days a valuable learning journey. Thank you InnovEgypt Program & TIEC for the opportunity! and thanks for my team and the Amazing instructor Dallia Taha #InnovEgypt #InnovEgyptS2026 #TIEC #Innovation #Entrepreneurship #AgriTech #AI

#VisionFoundationModels #ComputerVision #DeepLearning #ArtificialIntelligence #FewShotLearning #DomainAdaptation #ExplainableAI #PlantDiseaseDetection #PrecisionAgriculture #SmartAgriculture #AgriTech #Research #PhD

No signal in the field. No problem. 🌾📴 📱 Built an offline-first Android app for agricultural field officers: Agri Scout 🌱 Field officers often work where the signal is weak or missing. Agri Scout lets them record farm data anywhere and sync it automatically once connectivity returns. 🚀 Key Features: 🌾 Farm registration: farmer, crop type, area, farming type (organic/inorganic), and estimated yield 📍 Geotagged locations and map view: capture a farm's location and see it on the map 🦠 Disease catalog: searchable crop diseases and pests tagged by severity (High/Medium) 📴 Offline-first storage: all data is saved locally, so nothing is lost without a signal 🔄 Background sync: pending records upload automatically when the device is back online 📊 Dashboard: live counts of farms, logs, pending syncs, and alerts 🌙 Dark and light themes: comfortable to use in the field 🛠️ Tech Stack: Kotlin • Room • Retrofit • Work Manager Building this taught me a lot about offline-first architecture, local persistence, and reliable background sync, all for a real-world problem in agriculture. 🌍 This was a true team effort across the full development lifecycle, from requirements and schema design to testing and deployment. A great milestone for YHarvest - and a good moment to look back at how much has changed over the past months. We were among the Ukrainian AgriTech companies participating in the AgriTech Business Accelerator, a journey that took us from online sessions to two intensive weeks at UC Berkeley in May, followed by months of mentorship and a final in-person session in Ukraine. For YHarvest, the biggest value was not just knowledge. It was the opportunity to challenge how we think about customers, market entry, partnerships and scaling internationally. We are building YHarvest around a simple idea: agriculture needs much better data from the exact place where crops are growing - continuously collected throughout the season and transformed into actionable insights with AI. And now we are moving forward. In October, YHarvest is heading to TechCrunch in San Francisco. It is another important step for us as we expand our international network, explore the U.S. market and meet potential partners, customers and investors. We are ready for new challenges, new markets and the next stage of YHarvest’s growth. Thank you to the Berkeley Fisher Center for Business Analytics, UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, IT Ukraine Association, Chemonics International, mentors, experts and everyone involved in making this program possible. #YHarvest #AgriTech #TechCrunch #SanFrancisco #UkrainianStartups #DeepTech #AI #Agriculture #UCBerkeley #Innovation #Startup
