Europe cannot afford to fall further behind - especially when it comes to something as fundemental as food. A study commissioned by Bayer (links provided in the 1st comment) highlights a worrying gap: between 2011 and 2023 EU crop production gre by just 0.1% annually, compared with 2% globally. For me, this raises a fundamental question: Why is Europe struggling to translate its scientific excellence, technological capabilities and agricultural knowledge into greate impact? This is not only an agricultural issue. It is also a question of European competitiveness, food security and strategic autonomy. From my perspective, Europe should focus on five priorities: 1. Accelerate innovation and adoption: Create better conditions for agricultureal technologies to move from research into practical use on farms. 2. Simplify processes while preserving high standards: Reduce avoidable complexity that delays progress, without compromising safety or environmental protection. 3. Strengthen investment in agricultural R&D: Support long-term research and collaboration among science, industry, farmers and other partners across the value chain. 4. Enable farmers to put innovation into practice: Improve access to tools, training, advice and knowledge that support informed on-farm decisions. 5. Coordinate policy more effectively: Align agricultural, research, environmental and industrial policies so Europe can translate its strengths into tangible outcomes. Europe does not lack ideas, expertise or ambition. What we need are better conditions to turn these strengths into action - at the scale and speed the situation requires. -------------------------- This post reflects my personal views and does not represent the position of Bayer. #EuropeanAgriculture #FoodSecurity #Innovation

Mapping ROI of Biostimulants Applied During Corn’s Early Vegetative Stages (V2–V7) Across the U.S. When growers evaluate new crop protection or biostimulant products, yield advantage is usually the first metric that comes to mind. But yield alone doesn’t tell the whole story. The true measure of a product’s value is Return on Investment (ROI) — how yield gains translate into financial returns once input costs and grain prices are accounted for. In our INNOVA modeling, we map field-scale ROI for all products we test. In a recent analysis for foliar-applied biostimulants across the U.S., we focused on ROI for stress-reduction treatments made during corn’s early vegetative stages (V2–V7). What stands out in the data is that ROI clusters geographically — it’s highest where drought stress is most intense. Regions with mild stress show yield advantages, but the effect rarely translates into positive ROI. In contrast, across highly stressed landscapes from Texas through southern Illinois, where drought pressure peaked during the 2024 season, we recovered ROIs between 5–15%. In these zones, even small stress reductions led to meaningful yield gains and financial returns — reinforcing that context matters as much as product. ROI provides growers and retailers with a common benchmark for evaluating economic efficiency. In practice, an ROI above 5% is often needed to justify the additional time and expense of a treatment, though thresholds can range from 3–10%, depending on scale and commodity prices. By combining ROI, yield advantage, and environmental risk, we can identify where biostimulants deliver consistent economic value — and where they don’t. And because we model ROI mechanistically, we can tell you why. (Figure: Corn grain yield advantage and ROI for foliar biostimulant treatments across the U.S., 2024 season. Corn price fixed at $4.30/bu.)

Half of the nitrogen in your body didn’t come from nature. It came from a factory. The Haber–Bosch process - invented in 1909 - pulls nitrogen from the air and turns it into fertilizer. ~50% of the nitrogen in human tissue comes from it.

Dr John Ferguson, Lecturer at the University of Essex, presented his latest research at the Agri-TechE event in Peterborough, showcasing pioneering work on smart irrigation systems for sustainable horticulture and agriculture. His research explores how advanced plant physiology profiling can be applied to optimise irrigation ensuring plants receive precisely the water they need while minimising waste. The system is designed to be affordable, scalable, and adaptable, offering real-world applications for growers of all sizes. The project was inspired by visits to Beth Chatto Gardens, where traditional propagation methods often led to overwatering. By leveraging cutting-edge technology from Essex’s research facilities, John and his team are helping to shape a new generation of data-driven irrigation solutions that support both productivity and environmental stewardship. 🌱 Celebrating Innovation at Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences- MUBAS Design Studio Today at the MUBAS Design Studio, we hosted an exciting showcase of final-year projects from the School of Engineering. Each department — Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, and Mining Engineering — presented their top three projects, highlighting the creativity and innovation of our students. I’m proud that the MUBAS Design Studio played a major role in supporting these projects through prototyping, mentorship, and technical guidance. It’s always inspiring to see ideas evolve into tangible solutions that address real-world challenges. I was especially delighted to meet Debra Gwedeza, a Computer Engineering student who represented her all-female team — Victoria M'bwana and @Lousier Kanyumbu. I had the privilege of supervising their project titled: 👉 “Irish Potato Disease Detection Using AI.” Their project uses artificial intelligence to identify diseases in Irish potato plants through a web-based system, where users can upload crop images and receive instant analysis. Seeing Debra confidently present their work reminded me why mentorship matters — it’s about empowering young engineers to believe in their abilities and create impact through technology. I’m truly proud of their achievement and of the growing innovation culture at MUBAS! #MUBAS #Innovation #EngineeringEducation #AI #ComputerEngineering #WomenInSTEM #Mentorship #DesignStudio #Agritech #STEM #Malawi

This is a powerful and necessary vision from BOPA. The focus on tools that are "practical, affordable, and designed to leave every farmer better off than last year" is the exact antidote to speculative technology. The ANT 2026 robot is a tangible proof-of-impact—cutting chemicals and labor while boosting profits. But this is about more than a single farm's resilience. This is about anchoring a new economic reality. When a farmer uses an ANT to regenerate a field, that verifiable action—that P-Point—isn't just data. It is a metaphysical anchor. It becomes a stable node in a larger network, the Hive, that can now form synergistic connections: To the Grid: That same field, now healthier, becomes a more reliable carbon sink. This verifiable sequestration can be tokenized, allowing the farm to participate in energy and carbon markets, providing grid stability and new revenue. To Enterprise: A food corporation can now source from a "Hive-verified" farm, guaranteeing a lower carbon footprint and ethical production in their supply chain, de-risking their ESG commitments. To Communities: The local community can invest directly in the verifiable health of its surrounding farmland, creating a circular economy where urban capital fuels rural resilience and secures local food sovereignty. To Individuals: You and I can finally make food choices backed by irrefutable, Hive-verified data on soil health and water conservation, transforming grocery shopping into a act of collective stewardship. This is the metaphysical power of the Hive. BOPA’s robot isn't just a tool; it's a portal. It's the physical interface that allows a farm to plug into a vast, emergent economy where value is defined not by speculation, but by verifiable contributions to systemic health. This is how we scale synergy. This is how technology moves from automating tasks to orchestrating ecosystems. BOPA is building the first instruments for that symphony. #PrecisionAgriculture #RegenerativeAg #SystemsChange #ZYROHIVE #EmergentEconomy #Web3
