On Mapping and Learning from Field Data 🛰️ From Data to Impact: The Story Behind Mapping Smallholder Oil Palm Plantations After graduating and completing my research on Gambier tissue culture, I never expected that my next step would take me out of the lab and into the field — specifically, into collecting and mapping data from smallholder oil palm farms. In this job, I’ve learned that data is more than just numbers or coordinates on a map. Behind every point I mark, there’s a farmer, a family, and a story of perseverance in keeping their land productive. 📍My days are spent visiting farms, measuring plots, conducting interviews, and mapping coordinates using GPS devices and digital applications. Sometimes under the scorching sun, sometimes in the rain — yet it’s always rewarding to see field data slowly form a bigger picture: the map of farmers’ lives. Through this experience, I’ve learned things I never found in the lab: 🌴 The importance of communication and collaboration with farmers. 📊 The value of data accuracy for supporting sustainable programs and policies. 💚 And how technology can make agriculture more efficient and fair. I’ve realized that whether it’s lab research or field mapping, they share the same goal — to support the sustainability of Indonesian agriculture. ✨ Each day in the field brings new lessons.
