Belgium’s development finance institution, BIO INVEST, has announced an equity investment in Limbua Kenya, a German-Kenyan social enterprise at the center of Kenya’s growing macadamia industry.
Founded in 2006, LIMBUA Deutschland GmbH / LIMBUA Group Limited partners with nearly 10,000 certified smallholder farmers around Mount Kenya, sourcing and processing organic macadamias, avocados, and mangoes. The company operates four processing facilities that employ over 700 people, half of them women.
Limbua’s model promotes fair trade, biodiversity, and local value addition, ensuring farmers receive direct, above-market payments through mobile transactions. Farmers also receive continuous training on organic farming methods to improve yields and sustainability.
The company holds certifications such as EU Organic, USDA NOP, Bio Suisse, Fair for Life, and Demeter biodynamic, positioning its products strongly in global export markets.
BIO’s investment will enable Limbua to expand production capacity, strengthen agroforestry practices, and increase rural economic resilience. The partnership builds on earlier financial support from DEG’s AfricaConnect loan, which has backed Limbua’s growth since 2020.
“We’re proud to back a company that combines inclusive growth, sustainability, and innovation, contributing to Kenya’s agro-industrial transformation and better livelihoods for thousands of farmers.” said Nada Shall, BIO’s Regional Head for Eastern and Southern Africa.
