A few days ago, while reviewing our simulation logs, I realised something fascinating. Our rover and drone agents were starting to coordinate in a way that felt… familiar. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀. 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀. In traditional farming communities, collaboration is not planned on whiteboards. It happens naturally, one person scans the field, another checks the soil, someone else reads the clouds, and together they decide: “𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗴𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁?” “𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻?” “𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝘀?” This week at Kishkam Robotics Lab, we tried to capture that essence inside a simulation. No hardware. No physical robots. Just pure multi-agent learning guided by human wisdom. In our digital field: 🔹 The drone agent takes the role of the observer, spotting patterns from above. 🔹 The rover agent becomes the hands-on farmer responding to soil cues on the ground. 🔹 And between them flows a quiet exchange of information, inspired by the way farmers pass knowledge between generations. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝘆. 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Watching these agents negotiate tasks in a complex polycultural environment, we realised something powerful: AI doesn’t become smarter by mimicking machines. It becomes smarter by mimicking people, especially the people who understand the land best. We’re still deep in the computational phase of our research, but every simulation brings us closer to a future where technology respects tradition and learns from it. In my last post, I shared about our research paper “𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗮.” Today, I’d like to take you behind the scenes into the problem we tackled, the challenges we faced, and the approach that shaped our results. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Traditional plant identification methods are 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄, 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹, and often 𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲, especially in 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. They require 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 and are difficult to scale for 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 and 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱: • 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 across species • 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 with small datasets • 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 of deep learning • 𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 in pure deep learning systems 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵: We developed a 𝗵𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱 𝗔𝗜 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 that combines 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 with 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 for improved 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, and 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆. The 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗩𝟯 model was used for 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, while 𝗦𝗩𝗠 and 𝗞𝗡𝗡 handled 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.This reduced 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, improved 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, and kept computations 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: • 𝟴𝟰.𝟲% 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 on raw plant images • 𝗟𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 than end-to-end deep learning • 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗲 & 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗱-𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 • Strong potential for 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆, and 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 I am grateful to my 𝗰𝗼-𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀 for their collaboration and support. 🌾 A Day Well Spent at Kisan Mela 2025 – GKVK, Bengaluru! 🌿 I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Kisan Mela 2025 at GKVK, Bengaluru, and it turned out to be an enriching experience in every way.
