

UNLOCKING SOIL SECRETS
In the heart of an established oil palm and rubber plantations our recent soil survey set out to evaluate the current SOIL FERTILITY LEVELS, GRADIENTS OF SOIL NUTRIENT DISTRIBUTION ACROSS THE PLANTATIONS
This isn't just about data; it's about empowering sustainable growth for long-term productivity.
We started with precision mapping, using GIS tools to create detailed layouts.
These weren't rough sketches; they were scaled accurately, with grid intersections marking our sampling points as precise red dots. Each dot reps a targeted location for soil auger sampling. For ease, we geo-referenced these points into GPS units, turning complex navigation into a straightforward path through the terrain.
From there, our teams spread out collecting soil samples across areas. What started as a focused sampling exercise quickly evolved.
This ground-truthing insight made it clear, surface samples alone wouldn't tell the full story. To grasp the soils' true dynamics, we needed to examine them from the top down to about 200 cm deep. That's where soil profile pits became essential.
Think of a soil profile pit as a vertical cross-section of the earth, a carefully dug trench, typically 2 meter wide and up to 2 meters deep, exposing the soil's layered structure. The surface horizon rich in organic matter that supports immediate plant vigor; the subsoil layers that influence water flow and nutrient retention; and the deeper zones that signal potential challenges like compaction or acidity buildup over time.
To fully understand the soil properties at depth, we dug 10 pedons across the plantations, placing them at established mapping units allowing us to assess both the physical and chemical characteristics of the soils, which were then analyzed in the laboratory. For comparison, we also dug a pedon in an untouched area designated as a forest reserve to serve as a control reference against the pedons from the established plantations, since the reserve had never been disturbed for cultivation and still retained its natural forest properties, including its wildlife.
All samples were transported to the laboratory for detailed analysis to quantify key parameters needed to sustain plantation farming. The outcome was a comprehensive soil data report, featuring actionable maps, charts, and site-specific recommendations to optimize plantation performance.
Initially, the client focused on sole surface sampling, but our expertise made us to advocate strongly for these full pedon examinations. It's a reminder that true value in soil science comes from depth literally.
