    La fin de la sécheresse (météorologique) a été marquée par le début de la saison des orages méditerranéens offrant un spectacle grandiose durant l'intégralité de la nuit passée. Quelques centaines de photos entre l'Hortus (ici à droite) et le Pic Saint Loup (ici sortant du nuage à gauche), dont de nombreux coups de foudre ramifiés ! Il va me falloir des semaines pour tout traiter !

    On enchaîne. Il est maintenant très probable que nous allons vivre l'El-Nino le plus intense depuis le début de son observation sur Terre (et surement depuis des siècles). Les premiers effets se font sentir avec un décrochage total des températures mondiales. Le mois d'août 2026 pourrait être le mois d'août le plus chaud sur Terre depuis le début des mesures. Nous ne sommes qu'à 0.11°C du record absolu mondial de température et 0.01°C du record absolu de la surface des océans. La méditerranée enchaîne les records absolus de température avec une canicule marine qui dure depuis des semaines avec jusqu'à +3 à +6°C d'anomalie. Les derniers relevés montrent qu'avec une moyenne de 28.5°C, la surface de la mer Méditerranée vient de battre son record absolu de température. En d'autres termes, la mer Méditerranée n'a jamais été aussi chaude tous mois confondus. Ce n'est que le début. Nous sommes partis pour 1 an d'incroyables records à l'échelle planétaire.

🌱 New milestone in our Ecuador cocoa microbiome project! After months of optimisation, we’re finally generating continuous, time-resolved data on the bacteria and fungi circulating above Ecuadorian cocoa farms. Our aim is to understand when key pathogens start to appear — and by linking these biological signals to environmental metadata (such as weather-station data), we’re working towards developing a predictive model for disease outbreaks in cocoa. This project truly spans the full pipeline: 🧪 Field sampling using Burkard spore catchers 📄 Navigating Q-import paperwork and exemptions 🧬 Optimising DNA extraction workflows 💡 And finally, in-house sequencing on our MinION device 🎉 Today marks a big moment: Our first large batch is running — and the sequencer is performing beautifully. في تجربة فريدة في "مزرعة أسلا"، قمت بإجراء تحليل دقيق للبيانات البيئية (التربة، المناخ، المياه) لتقييم إمكانية زراعة وتطوير "شجرة التبلدي" (الباوباب - Baobab) العملاقة في بيئة المملكة العربية السعودية. النتيجة كانت مذهلة. بفضل الله ثم الدراسة المستفيضة، نجحت الزراعة وازدهرت الشجرة، وقد قمت بتوثيق هذه الرحلة والنمو عبر عدستي على منصة TikTok. هذا النجاح يثبت أهمية "تحليل البيانات" في استقطاب واختبار أنواع نباتية جديدة، مما يساهم في إثراء الغطاء النباتي وتحقيق مستهدفات السعودية الخضراء بناءً على أسس علمية مدروسة. link : ‏ASLA (@aslafarm) | TikTok In a unique experiment at "Asala Farm," I conducted a precise analysis of environmental data (soil, climate, water) to evaluate the feasibility of cultivating the giant "Baobab" tree in the Saudi environment. 🌾 The $84 Billion Question: Can Robots Really Handle the Chaos of Farming? Agricultural robotics is projected to surge to $84.19B by 2032, but it’s easy to talk about agricultural automation in clean labs and controlled environments. But step into a real outdoor farm—like the muddy, uneven, weather-beaten conditions in the regenerative farm I volunteered North of London—and the core challenge becomes painfully clear. Farming is chaotic. Terrain shifts overnight, visibility changes by the hour, and tools, crops, and environments rarely look the same twice. Today’s robots struggle here not because they lack sensors, but because they lack understanding. They cannot reason about context, interpret changes, or adapt their actions when the ground becomes mud, the tools get dirty, or the environment deviates from training data. 🚧 Why Agricultural Robots Fail in the Mud Most current systems operate on fixed perception pipelines: recognize object → perform predefined action. But mud, heavy rain, and organic clutter break these assumptions. Wheels slip. Depth cues distort. Crops look different under wet soil. Tools become partially occluded. In these unfavourable conditions, a robot must iteratively adjust grip strength, approach angle, path planning, and even its interpretation of the scene. Without multimodal integration of vision, language, proprioception, force feedback, LiDAR, and contextual reasoning, robots can’t improvise when the field becomes unpredictable. And farms are unpredictable every single day. 🤖 VLA Models: The Missing Link for Real-World Adaptation This is where Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models like Google DeepMind’s RT-2 change everything. By treating actions as a learned “language,” VLAs combine web-scale knowledge with real-world sensor data to help robots reason about situations—not just react. A VLA-powered robot can understand cues like “the ground is too soft—adjust your path,” “avoid the puddle,” or “pick the clean tool instead of the muddy one,” even when it has never seen that exact scenario before. In harsh, muddy, dynamic farm environments, VLAs enable robots to continuously refine decisions, adapt motions, and respond intelligently to natural language instructions. If agricultural robotics is going to succeed in the real world—not just in ideal controlled environments—VLA models are the breakthrough that will make it possible.
