What a Journey at the AI4Startups Hackathon
Last week, I had the privilege of participating in the AI4Startups Hackathon organized by Impact Hub Nairobi, tackling one of agriculture's most pressing challenges: post-harvest losses. While my team didn't take home the top prize, the experience was super enriching, and I'm walking away with insights that will shape my work in agritech for years to come.
Here are my key takeaways:
1. The power of interdisciplinary collaboration: Working alongside data scientists, agronomists (like myself), and tech developers showed me that solving complex agricultural challenges requires diverse perspectives. Our solution, market intelligence, would have been impossible without each team member's unique expertise. Thank you, team: BOSCO KAVISU, Ian Ereri, Ryan, and Francis.
2. AI is only as good as the ethics behind it: A huge thanks to Betty W Kyalo for your invaluable mentorship on AI data policy and governance.
3. Real-world impact requires more than technology: My team and I dove deep into the data: more than 40% post-harvest losses, equivalent to KES 72 billion lost annually across Kenya. But numbers alone don't create change. I learned that sustainable solutions must consider connectivity challenges, digital literacy, affordability, and farmer adoption. Technology is the tool, but understanding people's needs is the key.
We will continue exploring AI-driven solutions for agricultural challenges in Kenya.
I am very grateful for the connections I made, the lessons learned, and the problems identified, which are just the beginning of building something great.
I extend my sincere gratitude to our mentors Tiffany Kisiero, whose expertise helped us gain a deeper understanding of our product and target audience, and to Nyabuti Angwenyi, who provided crucial insights into the postharvest loss challenges we were working to solve.
