Reducing emissions while increasing farm productivity is becoming one of agriculture's biggest priorities. Strategic collaborations between research institutions and agritech companies are helping turn climate-smart farming practices into scalable solutions for millions of farmers.
BASF has entered into a strategic partnership with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research – Central Rice Research Institute (ICAR-CRRI) to advance climate-smart rice cultivation in India. The two-year research initiative, to be conducted across Odisha and Jharkhand, will evaluate how Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) irrigation can reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining or improving rice yields.
As part of the collaboration, the organizations will also study how herbicide-tolerant (HT) rice varieties, including CR Dhan 807 and CR Dhan 812 developed by ICAR-CRRI, can support AWD adoption by helping farmers effectively manage weed growth in intermittently drained fields. The findings are expected to support BASF's global carbon farming program in Asia Pacific and contribute toward its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from rice cultivation by 30%. The initiative will also explore opportunities for carbon farming programs aligned with Verra's VM0051 methodology, creating potential new income streams for farmers through future carbon credit mechanisms.
This partnership reflects a broader transformation in global agriculture, where sustainability is increasingly being driven by scientific research, digital farming, climate-resilient crop varieties, and carbon reduction strategies.
