Nvidia just bought Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Here's why smallholder farmers should care. The AI quietly transforming African agriculture, crop disease detection from a phone photo, yield prediction from satellite imagery, credit scoring for farmers with no bank statements, mostly runs on open-source models. Models a small team can download, fine-tune on local crops and local data, and deploy without a Silicon Valley budget. Hugging Face was the front door to all of that. Now the world's biggest chipmaker owns it. Maybe nothing changes. Nvidia profits when more people build. But agriculture in emerging markets has learned this lesson before with seeds and fertilizer: when the inputs get consolidated, the smallest players pay the price. For those of us building AI for smallholder finance, the takeaway is clear: Fine-tune and own your models. A crop-yield model trained on Ethiopian teff or Kenyan maize is an asset no acquisition can take from you. The real moat was never the base model, it's the local data and the trust of the farmers behind it. The next decade of agricultural AI in Africa shouldn't depend on decisions made in a boardroom in Santa Clara. #AgriTech #AI #FinancialInclusion #Smallholders #Africa #AgriFinance

One story that genuinely stayed with me was of KhetiGrow. I had a conversation with Purushotam Kumar, the founder of KhetiGrow, and what stood out immediately was how clearly he understood the problem he was solving. He observed a simple but deeply rooted issue in India: - 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐬, 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧. Instead of just talking about it, he decided to build for it. KhetiGrow is focused on creating a platform that helps farmers sell their produce at the 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞, ensuring better pricing and fair returns. During the expo itself, he had collaborated with a farmer and was helping them sell 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐬— a small detail, but a powerful signal of real impact. The core value proposition of KhetiGrow is simple yet meaningful: 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞/𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞. Seeing someone at such a young age working on a real, grassroots problem was inspiring. This is the kind of entrepreneurship that creates long-term change — not just businesses, but trust and impact. I met a few more founders with equally interesting stories, and I’ll be sharing those in upcoming posts. 🔗 Lien vers l’article https://lnkd.in/eMH8DxYS

Why Agri Startups Need a Custom ERP (Not Excel) 🌱 Excel is great for starting out. But agri startups don’t stay “small” for long. Here’s where Excel starts breaking 👇 • Multiple farmers, vendors & SKUs → version chaos • Manual stock updates → wrong inventory, delayed dispatch • No real-time crop, yield or procurement visibility • Zero integration with accounting, IoT, or field apps • Decisions based on outdated data A custom ERP fixes this. ✔ Real-time farm-to-market tracking ✔ Batch, lot & season-wise inventory ✔ Procurement, logistics & finance in one system ✔ Mobile access for field teams ✔ Scales as farmers, regions & volumes grow Excel manages data. ERP manages a business. Agri startups that adopt ERP early move faster, waste less, and scale smarter. If you’re building in AgriTech, your backend matters as much as your innovation. #AgriTech #AgriStartups #ERP #DigitalTransformation #StartupScaling #FarmToFork #CustomSoftware

Farmers often walk into a paddock and ask a question that sounds simple but isn’t: “Is there enough grass here for the herd?” The answer affects grazing timing, pasture recovery, animal welfare, and even soil health. Get it wrong and the land (and livestock) pay the price. Get it right and everyone wins. That’s why I jumped into CSIRO Image2Biomass Prediction (Kaggle) — the challenge is to predict pasture biomass from images + ground-truth measurements, and the dataset includes different seasons/regions/species mixes, with NDVI provided to strengthen models. What I built (model + techniques) Instead of treating this like “just another CNN regression,” I built a pipeline that matches the competition structure (one image → multiple targets): Primary backbone: EfficientNetV2-S (transfer learning via pretrained weights) Experiments: ConvNeXt-Base as a second strong feature extractor (and for ensembling) Training setup: K-Fold CV, TTA (test-time augmentation), and ensemble-style inference Target strategy: trained on core components and derived the remaining ones to keep the learning problem stable (since the competition asks for five biomass components).  Also: it’s a code competition (Notebook submissions, internet off, runtime limits), so I kept everything efficient + reproducible in a single train→infer→submit workflow. The “metadata” chapter (what I tried + what happened) The dataset has useful metadata like Sampling_Date, State, Species, NDVI, and average height. So naturally I tried to make the model smarter by adding metadata signals — in theory: NDVI + height should correlate with biomass, State/Species/Season should help the model generalize across conditions. What I found: adding metadata naïvely didn’t immediately boost my LB the way I expected. My takeaway is that metadata isn’t “free accuracy” — it needs careful handling: categorical fields (like Species) need strong encoding (embeddings / hashing / frequency pruning), dates need a seasonal representation, missing/noisy values need robust preprocessing. If I ever revisit this, here’s how I’d improve it A proper two-tower model: image encoder + tabular encoder (metadata) with late fusion Stronger target transforms (log/quantile) + robust regression loss (Huber / SmoothL1) Better CV scheme (grouping by location/time where possible to reduce leakage) Smarter TTA + augmentation tuned for pasture textures Calibrated ensembling across backbones 📌 Open-sourced repo: https://lnkd.in/d5BysCBr — Hitarth Pandey #Kaggle #ComputerVision #MachineLearning #DeepLearning #AI #AgriTech #DataScience Competition: https://lnkd.in/dh-G-tQi Leaderboard: https://lnkd.in/d32nebQN
