My first-ever hackathon finale, and what a way to spend Christmas! 🎄
2 minutes to go. 400+ teams. One click. That final rush led Team Viksit Kisan to the Top 75 at the GenAI Hackathon Mumbai 2025 Grand Finale. 🌟
Spending Christmas Day building for 6 intense hours was a different kind of celebration! One fueled by the energy of fellow creators and a mission to solve a critical failure in the PMFBY scheme.
In Maharashtra alone, 4,30,443 crop damage claims were rejected in a single season. Most weren’t fraudulent, they were legitimate losses disqualified by systemic barriers:
- The 72-Hour Window: Reporting is too complex to navigate during a crisis.
- The Language Trap: Even in Marathi or Hindi, farmers’ claims are rejected due to minor technical entry mistakes, often caused by confusing terminology, unclear formats, or digital form constraints.
- The 'Black Box': Farmers have no way to verify the compensation they are actually owed.
Our solution is Viksit Kisan - a ‘Digital Talathi’ for farmers. Imagine Ramdas Bhau, distressed after unseasonal rains destroyed his crops. Instead of navigating complex paperwork, he simply speaks in Marathi/Hindi. The system processes his voice, damage photos, and 7/12 extract to auto-generate a ready-to-submit application along with a claim intelligence report that estimates his payout using the 2025 Scale of Finance (e.g., ₹60k/Ha for cotton). Within minutes, Ramdas Bhau has both clarity and the documents he needs.
Tech Stack: Google Gemini 2.5 Flash, MongoDB Atlas, Streamlit.
The heart of our build was 'Empathy Logic'. While standard AI might reject muddy photos as 'unclear', we tuned our prompts to recognize 'waterlogged soil' as valid proof. We prioritized the farmer's reality over rigid rules.
Delivering a focused pitch under that pressure was a personal win, transforming technical complexity into a human story. Though the buzzer beat us to live deployment (we were running locally at the deadline), witnessing the winners’ flawless execution was a humbling masterclass. That level of innovation doesn’t sting, it inspires. 🙌
Engineering doesn’t stop when the timer ends. We believed in this too much to let it sit in a repo, so post-hackathon we debugged, optimized, and successfully deployed the final version.
