🌾 Under the National Food Security Strategy 2051, the UAE has set bold targets to significantly expand domestic food production, with the aim of reducing import dependency and strengthening long-term food resilience.
In a country characterised by arid conditions and limited arable land, achieving this depends on sustained, systematic investigation and the creation of new knowledge amid inherent uncertainty.
R&D in this context introduces a distinct set of challenges:
🌱 Growing crops in extreme heat, low humidity, and saline soil
💧 Minimising water and energy use across cultivation and processing
📊 Designing data-driven systems for yield optimisation and biosecurity
🏭 Building scalable, local production that meets global food safety standards
Two UAE private-sector projects that show how these challenges are being tackled:
🍓 Pure Harvest – Smart Farming
Pure Harvest is pioneering high-tech greenhouse farming in the UAE, producing tomatoes, leafy greens, and strawberries in inhospitable conditions. Its systems combine advanced climate modelling, AI-driven control, and unique greenhouse design to regulate temperature, humidity, and light with precision. The technological uncertainty lies in continuously refining growing environments so that crops achieve consistent quality and yield under conditions where traditional agriculture is not viable.
🥬 Silal – Agri-Tech
Abu Dhabi-based Silal is developing locally viable crop varieties and cultivation methods tailored to the UAE’s climate. Its work spans controlled-environment agriculture, field trials, and data-led agronomy to improve resilience, reduce water usage, and expand the range of foods that can be grown domestically. Much of the R&D focuses on understanding how genetics, soil, water chemistry, and microclimates interact, and how to engineer systems that perform reliably in extreme environments.
A cornerstone of the UAE’s long-term resilience agenda, food and agri-tech R&D is reshaping how food is grown, processed, and distributed. What was once constrained by geography and climate is increasingly shaped by science, engineering, and data, turning food security from a vulnerability into a platform for innovation.
