Is every startup supposed to start with an MVP and “customer discovery”? Or does that logic quietly break when you’re building real technology for real-world problems? Most conventional tech ideas begin the same way: → build a lightweight MVP → test for gaps → see if anyone cares → then iterate That works when the problem is assumed. But what about sectors like #agritech, #climate, #water, or #infrastructure, where the problem is already painfully obvious? No farmer needs to be convinced water scarcity exists. No municipality needs a survey to confirm energy inefficiency. The gap is known. The pain is lived. What’s missing isn’t validation of the problem. It’s proof that the solution actually works in the wild. --------------------------------------------------- I thought of this post during a recent conversation with a GCC-based startup working in the atmospheric water and sustainability space. From the start, the technology stood out. Thoughtful engineering. Designed for low-humidity environments. Built with energy efficiency and off-grid deployment in mind. This wasn’t a “let’s test demand” idea; instead, this was a “let’s prove reliability, economics, and trust” challenge. And yet, like many deep-tech startups, they were carrying the expectations of a typical startup playbook: → multiple customer types at once → exploratory pilots without commercial endpoints → technical differentiation explained before buyer clarity Nothing was wrong. It was just… crowded. So instead of talking about growth or scale, we slowed down. We shifted the conversation from who might want this to: ↳ who needs to trust this first ↳ what decision-maker actually signs and pays ↳ what a pilot must prove to become a real deployment That’s when things clicked. The answer wasn’t to build more. It was to choose more deliberately. Narrow the first buyer. Design pilots for credibility, not curiosity. Let objections guide the roadmap. Treat focus as strategy, not limitation. By the end, the startup didn’t leave with louder ambition. They left with calmer clarity. And in deep tech, that’s usually the turning point. If you’re building in sectors where the problem is already real and undeniable, don’t force yourself into shallow validation rituals. Sometimes the work isn’t to ask if the market cares.
