Nvidia just bought Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Here's why smallholder farmers should care. The AI quietly transforming African agriculture, crop disease detection from a phone photo, yield prediction from satellite imagery, credit scoring for farmers with no bank statements, mostly runs on open-source models. Models a small team can download, fine-tune on local crops and local data, and deploy without a Silicon Valley budget. Hugging Face was the front door to all of that. Now the world's biggest chipmaker owns it. Maybe nothing changes. Nvidia profits when more people build. But agriculture in emerging markets has learned this lesson before with seeds and fertilizer: when the inputs get consolidated, the smallest players pay the price. For those of us building AI for smallholder finance, the takeaway is clear: Fine-tune and own your models. A crop-yield model trained on Ethiopian teff or Kenyan maize is an asset no acquisition can take from you. The real moat was never the base model, it's the local data and the trust of the farmers behind it. The next decade of agricultural AI in Africa shouldn't depend on decisions made in a boardroom in Santa Clara. #AgriTech #AI #FinancialInclusion #Smallholders #Africa #AgriFinance

#Agriculture is not just a sector for me — it’s a responsibility. 🌾 Honoured and grateful to MANAGE-CIA for inviting me to be part of this meaningful conversation on #agrientrepreneurship. Discussions like these are important because they move beyond theory and focus on real, scalable impact for farmers. We didn’t build Rashail Agro - Fasalam Agri Ecosystem just to sell products — we built it to solve real challenges #farmers face every day. From irrigation uncertainty to field monitoring, technology must be practical, accessible, and built for Indian conditions. As a #founder, I constantly think about scale and sustainability. As a #leader, I stay connected to ground realities — because true innovation begins in the field, not in boardrooms. Thank you once again to #MANAGE for creating platforms that empower agri-entrepreneurs and strengthen India’s farming ecosystem. The mission remains clear: Make farming smarter, more resilient, and more profitable through technology. #AgriTech #Leadership #StartupIndia #PrecisionFarming #RashailAgro #Fasalam #FasalamAgriEcosystem

As we enter 2026, one thing is clear in Nigeria's tech landscape: AI isn't on the horizon—it's already here and transforming everything. From fintech automating credit scoring to agritech predicting crop yields using local data, and government pilots transitioning to production-scale AI, the move from "pilot mode" to real impact is accelerating. In my roles as a data scientist, analyst, and full-stack web & software developer, I've witnessed how integrating these skills generates significant value: - Building machine learning models that are deployable (thanks to MLOps fundamentals) - Creating intuitive dashboards and web applications that convert raw insights into actionable decisions - Using Python along with React and Node stacks to prototype AI-powered tools in days, not months However, there's a reality check for fellow Nigerian tech professionals: the most sought-after roles today are not just about "knowing AI"—they focus on practical application in resource-constrained environments, even with the challenges posed by inconsistent power supply. Key skills gaining traction in 2026 include: - AI/ML and generative tools - Data literacy and analytics, especially in cleaning messy real-world Nigerian datasets - Full-stack development with AI integration - Cloud basics for scalable applications If you are upskilling or hiring in these areas, what trends or challenges are you observing in 2026? I invite insights from Lagos hustlers, Abuja innovators, Ibadan builders, and everyone in between. Let's share our experiences.

🚜 Why Did So Many AgTech Startups Shut Down in 2025? A new white paper from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln analyzes 18 global AgTech shutdowns in 2025 across CEA, robotics, insect protein, digital platforms, sensors, and ag-biotech — and the findings are both sobering and instructive. The central insight: 👉 Most startups did not fail because the technology didn’t work. 👉 They failed because farms couldn’t economically absorb the cost and operational burden. The authors introduce the Cost-Adoption Mismatch Effect — a structural misalignment between: 💰 Capital intensity (CAPEX + OPEX + energy costs) 🔄 Adoption friction (workflow disruption, payback uncertainty, behavioral change) 🌾 Farm-level margins (often 5–10% net returns under volatile conditions) When high capital requirements meet high adoption friction, failure risk spikes — regardless of strong science, working prototypes, or even substantial venture funding. 📊 Key Patterns Observed: CEA/Vertical farming had the highest shutdown concentration Robotics and insect protein struggled with long payback cycles Digital platforms faced monetization and willingness-to-pay constraints Funding failure was often the final stage, not the root cause Venture capital can extend runway — but it cannot fix broken unit economics in a margin-constrained industry. 🔄 What’s Emerging Instead? The paper suggests a shift toward: Service-based models (e.g., Robotics-as-a-Service) Modular deployment vs. mega infrastructure buildouts Embedded ag-fintech AI-enabled advisory tools with low CAPEX Evidence-backed biologicals Water & energy cost-reduction systems The takeaway is not that AgTech is failing. It’s that AgTech is maturing. Future success depends on designing technologies that align with: ✔ Seasonal cash flows ✔ Clear and short ROI cycles ✔ Minimal workflow disruption ✔ Real farm economics Innovation must fit the field — not just the pitch deck. #AgTech #AgriculturalInnovation #StartupLessons #VentureCapital #FoodSystems #FarmEconomics #SustainableAgriculture #AgriTech #InnovationStrategy #UnitEconomics #Entrepreneurship https://lnkd.in/d3nYagVr
