On 17th February, we had the opportunity to visit the ICAR- National Research Centre for Banana as part of our industrial visit. The visit began with an insightful lecture by Dr. Loganathan, Principal Scientist at NRCB, on the role of microbes in agriculture and the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) process involved in registering microbial products. The session covered: The role of beneficial microbes in sustainable agriculture Biopesticides and their growing market potential Applications of microbes across industries The complete regulatory and registration framework for microbial formulations What stood out to me was not just the science — but the impact. We explored various value-added products developed from different parts of the banana plant. It was inspiring to see how scientists are working to: • Help farmers recover losses during extreme climate events • Improve banana utilization across the supply chain • Convert agricultural produce and residues into high-value products • Promote biodegradable alternatives that reduce carbon footprint This is circular economy in action. However, the larger challenge remains — the market still favors plastic-based products over sustainable organic alternatives. The transition toward eco-friendly consumption ultimately lies in our collective choices as consumers, entrepreneurs, and policymakers. Visits like these reinforce my belief that sustainability is not just about awareness — it is about innovation, systems thinking, and responsible market transformation.
