Nvidia just bought Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Here's why smallholder farmers should care. The AI quietly transforming African agriculture, crop disease detection from a phone photo, yield prediction from satellite imagery, credit scoring for farmers with no bank statements, mostly runs on open-source models. Models a small team can download, fine-tune on local crops and local data, and deploy without a Silicon Valley budget. Hugging Face was the front door to all of that. Now the world's biggest chipmaker owns it. Maybe nothing changes. Nvidia profits when more people build. But agriculture in emerging markets has learned this lesson before with seeds and fertilizer: when the inputs get consolidated, the smallest players pay the price. For those of us building AI for smallholder finance, the takeaway is clear: Fine-tune and own your models. A crop-yield model trained on Ethiopian teff or Kenyan maize is an asset no acquisition can take from you. The real moat was never the base model, it's the local data and the trust of the farmers behind it. The next decade of agricultural AI in Africa shouldn't depend on decisions made in a boardroom in Santa Clara. #AgriTech #AI #FinancialInclusion #Smallholders #Africa #AgriFinance

It was a milestone moment for Leedana earlier this month in Nuweiba. We had the opportunity to welcome a delegation including the Governor of South Sinai and the President of the British University in Egypt to showcase how Sandponics works in the field. It is a testament to Mr. Maged El Said’s vision of a living lab at the Habiba Community that we were able to participate in such a gathering. While the delegation was exploring the "From Waste to Wealth" initiative, seeing our production site in the heart of the Sinai sparked a vital conversation about the future of food security. The Reality of Scaling: Our goal at Leedana is to turn abandoned and unproductive lands into fertile ground for local growers. We are bringing research innovation to practical application by providing a system that works in harsh conditions, uses minimal water, and is easy for anyone to manage. The response from regional leaders confirms that the need for this is urgent. We are proving that pure sand isn't a barrier, it’s an opportunity. #Leedana #DesertFarming #Sandponics #Sinai #AgriTech #FoodSecurity #Egypt

👉 Le français suit! 📢 New paper now available online (e-first, open access) in The Forestry Chronicle (Canadian Institute of Forestry / Institut forestier du Canada): 🌲 https://lnkd.in/gvQ4vjYW 🌳 It's a 25-year retrospective look at greenhouse mycorrhizal inoculation effects on operational jack pine and black spruce plantations across northern Ontario. We detected long-term stand-level signals for jack pine on dry, nutrient-poor sites, but responses for black spruce planted on mesic sites were limited. These results are a good reminder that early establishment processes can shape trajectories decades later. Kudos to lead author Jason Shabaga, and to Dave Morris! A very special thank you to our Indigenous partners from Wahkohtowin Development who helped frame the research question and revisit these legacy trials to bring the story full circle.

The moment I saw the PachiPanda Challenge announcement, I knew we had to apply. Not because we had all the answers. Not because our platform was perfect. But because the problem we are solving farmers losing 40% of their harvest while 5.9 million Cameroonians go hungry desperately needed a seat at any table discussing climate innovation. For months, I had watched my mother and her fellow farmers in Manyemen work tirelessly only to see their crops rot or get sold at unfair prices. I had seen the cycle repeat generation after generation. The PachiPanda Challenge, organized by MTN Cameroon and WWF CAMEROON , was asking for solutions at the intersection of food, energy, and water security. That was exactly where FURAHA - TALLA lived. So I sat down, wrote our application, and submitted it with a simple prayer: that someone would see the potential in connecting farmers directly to markets through a simple platform accessible on any phone. That prayer was answered beyond my wildest expectations. To every young Cameroonian with an idea that could change your community: Dare to apply. You never know which door will open. #PachiPandaChallenge #FurahaTalla #CameroonInnovation #AgriTech
