Nvidia just bought Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Here's why smallholder farmers should care. The AI quietly transforming African agriculture, crop disease detection from a phone photo, yield prediction from satellite imagery, credit scoring for farmers with no bank statements, mostly runs on open-source models. Models a small team can download, fine-tune on local crops and local data, and deploy without a Silicon Valley budget. Hugging Face was the front door to all of that. Now the world's biggest chipmaker owns it. Maybe nothing changes. Nvidia profits when more people build. But agriculture in emerging markets has learned this lesson before with seeds and fertilizer: when the inputs get consolidated, the smallest players pay the price. For those of us building AI for smallholder finance, the takeaway is clear: Fine-tune and own your models. A crop-yield model trained on Ethiopian teff or Kenyan maize is an asset no acquisition can take from you. The real moat was never the base model, it's the local data and the trust of the farmers behind it. The next decade of agricultural AI in Africa shouldn't depend on decisions made in a boardroom in Santa Clara. #AgriTech #AI #FinancialInclusion #Smallholders #Africa #AgriFinance

So I was digging into some research about why we aren’t seeing more #Renewable energy and #Smart #Farming tech everywhere and it’s honestly just a lot more complicated than I thought because there are so many barriers in the way and I mean a lot. It’s not just about the money although the high costs are a huge deal but there’s also this big #social side where people just don’t want to change how they do things or they don't like how the tech looks and it really surprised me how much the "complexity" of the tech matters because the more complicated a new tool feels the less likely anyone is to actually use it and that makes total sense because if you’re a farmer and someone hands you a super complex system that you don’t understand you’re probably just going to stick to what you know and it really shows that we need to stop making things so fancy and start making them way easier to use if we want things to actually change. let me know what you think about why some of this stuff just isn't sticking yet? How can it be fixed or the rate of adoption can be improved? #sustainability #RenewableEnergy #AgriTech

Kowloon City — Park Bench Update 🌱 Quick scheduling note: this week’s Saturday Park Bench chat is moving back a couple of hours. (Regular cadence stays the same — just adjusting this one.) 🕘 7:30–9:30 AM Central 🕖 5:30–7:30 AM Pacific 🌍 13:30–15:30 UTC As always — open forum, come and go as you like. No corporate energy. Just thoughtful, curious conversation. This week I’d especially love to explore something emerging in our world: Audrey has been asked to be a founder of an Agritech company, and it raises a bigger question: How do we bridge science into AI in ways that genuinely make humans and the planet healthier? Some threads I’d love to explore: • Agritech + AI • Life sciences + AI • Biotech + geospatial modeling • Data systems that support soil health, food systems, ecosystems, and long-term human wellness Where do you see AI meaningfully improving health — beyond optimization and extraction? What unintended consequences should we be thinking about? If you’d like an invite to this week’s chat, DM me. If there’s a specific angle you want covered, drop it in the comments. Park bench rules apply: respectful, open, exploratory. Let’s build something healthier. 🌍

Insights from the 9th Africa Agri Expo 2026 🇰🇪 I just wrapped up an incredible two days at #AAE2026 in Nairobi. The energy at the KICC was a clear signal: Africa is no longer just the future of agriculture—it’s the powerhouse of the present. My 3 Big Takeaways: Smart Farming is Scaling: AI and drone tech are moving from "concepts" to the hands of smallholder farmers. Local Value Addition: There’s a massive, urgent shift toward processing raw materials within the continent to boost economic sovereignty. Climate Resilience: Sustainable fertilizers and water-smart tech were the real stars of the show, proving that "green" and "profitable" now go hand-in-hand. It was inspiring to connect with the innovators driving Africa toward a $1 trillion agribusiness industry by 2030. Were you at the expo? I’d love to hear your highlights in the comments! 👇 #AfricaAgriExpo #Agritech #Agribusiness #SustainableFarming #Nairobi #FoodSecurity
