Nvidia just bought Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Here's why smallholder farmers should care. The AI quietly transforming African agriculture, crop disease detection from a phone photo, yield prediction from satellite imagery, credit scoring for farmers with no bank statements, mostly runs on open-source models. Models a small team can download, fine-tune on local crops and local data, and deploy without a Silicon Valley budget. Hugging Face was the front door to all of that. Now the world's biggest chipmaker owns it. Maybe nothing changes. Nvidia profits when more people build. But agriculture in emerging markets has learned this lesson before with seeds and fertilizer: when the inputs get consolidated, the smallest players pay the price. For those of us building AI for smallholder finance, the takeaway is clear: Fine-tune and own your models. A crop-yield model trained on Ethiopian teff or Kenyan maize is an asset no acquisition can take from you. The real moat was never the base model, it's the local data and the trust of the farmers behind it. The next decade of agricultural AI in Africa shouldn't depend on decisions made in a boardroom in Santa Clara. #AgriTech #AI #FinancialInclusion #Smallholders #Africa #AgriFinance

#Hyperspectral #PrecisionAgriculture #Phenotyping #DataScience #RemoteSensing #Agritech

🇩🇰 Can fungal-based biological solutions protect European crops from the $1.9bn global threat of potato late blight? Mycoverse, an agritech spin-out from the DTU - Technical University of Denmark, is developing biological crop protection to replace traditional chemical pesticides. The firm utilises an AI-driven discovery platform and advanced fungal production technology to identify strains that integrate into existing farming systems. With lead candidates already showing strong performance in greenhouse trials, the team is now scaling its efforts to combat one of Europe's most destructive crop diseases. 🚀 Raised €2.4m in pre-seed equity funding to bring total capital to €4.3m. 🚀 Round co-led by Future Food Fund and HTGF | High-Tech Gründerfonds with participation from PINC, the venture arm of Paulig. 🚀 Initial focus targets the potato late blight market which is valued at c. $1.9bn globally. 🚀 Future applications are planned for other high-value sectors including grapevine. This is a significant step forward for the future of sustainable agriculture and crop resilience across Europe. -- 👀 Follow aulium for more insights and interviews on Innovation & Private Capital ☄️ aulium is made possible thanks to Influences LoanTube (FT1000 2026 Laureate) #agritech #biotech #sustainability #denmark #venturecapital

✋ AI ambition is high in Europe—but real-world adoption is still catching up. 👉 The new report, Progress in Implementing the European Union Coordinated Plan on Artificial Intelligence (Volume 2): Uptake in High-Impact Sectors by the OECD - OCDE highlights this. Key takeaways: 🚜 Agriculture – AI powers precision farming, robotics, predictive analytics and smart monitoring. Yet adoption remains uneven due to connectivity gaps, fragmented data and limited digital skills. 🏥 Healthcare – AI is transforming diagnostics, hospital management and drug discovery. But scaling is slowed by siloed health data, interoperability issues and regulatory complexity. 🏭 Manufacturing – Predictive maintenance, quality control and supply chain optimisation show strong potential. Still, only 11% of firms use AI, mostly in non-core functions like text processing. 🚍 Mobility – AI supports automated driving, smart public transport and logistics. However, just 8% of transport enterprises report AI use. 📉 Barriers remain systemic – Talent shortages, high upfront costs, legacy IT systems, fragmented datasets and regulatory uncertainty limit broader deployment. 🔧 The path forward – Investment in infrastructure, interoperable data spaces (EHDS, CEADS), AI skills, regulatory clarity and cross-sector collaboration is critical. Europe has the strategy. The next challenge is scale and integration. 💬 What will it take to move AI from pilot projects to full transformation across key sectors? #ArtificialIntelligence #EUAI #DigitalTransformation #InnovationPolicy #Manufacturing #Healthcare #AgriTech #SmartMobility ✋ Follow my substack, 'The Monthly Global Energy & Climate Transition Roundup', covering top developments in clean energy and climate. 👉 Subscribe for free at https://lnkd.in/d-6Efimt
