Nvidia just bought Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Here's why smallholder farmers should care. The AI quietly transforming African agriculture, crop disease detection from a phone photo, yield prediction from satellite imagery, credit scoring for farmers with no bank statements, mostly runs on open-source models. Models a small team can download, fine-tune on local crops and local data, and deploy without a Silicon Valley budget. Hugging Face was the front door to all of that. Now the world's biggest chipmaker owns it. Maybe nothing changes. Nvidia profits when more people build. But agriculture in emerging markets has learned this lesson before with seeds and fertilizer: when the inputs get consolidated, the smallest players pay the price. For those of us building AI for smallholder finance, the takeaway is clear: Fine-tune and own your models. A crop-yield model trained on Ethiopian teff or Kenyan maize is an asset no acquisition can take from you. The real moat was never the base model, it's the local data and the trust of the farmers behind it. The next decade of agricultural AI in Africa shouldn't depend on decisions made in a boardroom in Santa Clara. #AgriTech #AI #FinancialInclusion #Smallholders #Africa #AgriFinance

Singapore to inject S$70 million over five years to boost local farm output New measures include an expanded national breeding programme and fresh hatchery support for the aquaculture sector. Summary: Singapore is putting fresh weight behind food resilience with a S$70 million (US$55m) injection over five years to help local farms expand capacity, adopt advanced tech, and build climate resilience, amid rising supply-chain volatility from climate, disease, and geopolitics. This new tranche—under the renamed Agri-Food Cluster Transformation Fund (ACT Fund 2)—extends a scheme first launched in 2021 that supported 150 projects across 60 firms (with a reported ~3% company failure rate). New support areas include a dedicated component to catalyse industry partnerships for shared, sector-wide solutions (e.g., pooled resources, supply chain optimisation), addressing the structural constraint of limited economies of scale in Singapore’s farm sector. The measures sit within Singapore Food Story 2, a “multi-pillar” approach spanning diversifying imports, growing local, stockpiling, and global partnerships—an explicit shift away from over-reliance on any single lever in resilience strategy. Notably for aquaculture, the package emphasises capability-building upstream: demonstration projects to test overseas technologies in Singapore-like operating conditions, an expanded national breeding programme (e.g., including red snapper), and strengthened hatchery linkages to improve reliable supply of post-larvae/fingerlings. On the demand side, efforts continue to grow offtake via channels like SAFEF and programmes such as the Farm-to-Table Recognition Programme (which recognises food businesses procuring ≥15% local produce in selected categories). #FoodResilience #FoodSecurity #SingaporeFoodStory2 #ClimateResilience #SupplyChainResilience #ACTFund #AgriTech #ControlledEnvironmentAgriculture #UrbanFarming #Aquaculture #Hatchery #BreedingProgramme #Productivity #Innovation #RIE2030 #Sustainability #LocalProduce #FarmToTable #ClimateAdaptation #Singapore https://lnkd.in/g79zHvHM

"The future of ag won’t come from thinking harder inside the box, it will come from realising: the box was always optional." SwarmFarm Robotics CEO & Co-founder Andrew Bate opened #evokeAG2026 with a keynote that didn’t shy away from the tough questions — and brought bold ideas to the table for Australia’s ag future. As a Central Queensland farmer, Andrew challenged us all: “Build for the future, not the past.” Andrew called for Australia to celebrate failure, embrace risk, and create a culture where setbacks are seen as stepping stones to innovation - or in Andrew´s words: “Lean into the edge, don’t sit in the center.” Right after, the conversation kept rolling with a powerhouse panel featuring George Peppou, Kate Cornick, Jen Taylor, and David Swan, diving into what it really takes to drive ag innovation forward. Massive thanks to the organizers of AgriFutures evokeAG for an event that sparks real conversation and action! #evokeAG2026 #FutureOfFarming #AgriFoodTech #AgInnovation #AgriTech #Robotics #SwarmFarmRobotics

Canada Agriculture Week was a big one for BCCAI as we connected with producers, researchers, innovators and industry leaders across the country.   As a sponsor of the Future of Food conference in Ottawa, we joined national discussions on how technology can strengthen Canada’s food systems. BCCAI director, Rahul Singh, and Simon Fraser University Strategic Partnerships Hub director, Christopher Duffin, engaged with partners, shared how AI can support a more resilient agri‑food sector and took in insights from the Canadian Agri-Food Automation & Intelligence Network's fireside chat on tariffs. The week also coincided with an exciting announcement from Farm Credit Canada (FCC / FAC): a $5 billion coalition to accelerate investment in Canadian agriculture and food.   The next day, we took part in the Southern Interior Horticultural Show in Penticton, where Singh delivered a plenary talk on the role of AI in modern farming and its practical value for agribusinesses. Singh and Duffin then connected with growers and community members at our booth to discuss BCCAI’s work in advancing agritech innovation across B.C.   It was an energizing week of conversations at both the national and local level, and we’re excited to continue building technology‑enabled, sustainable and future‑ready food systems across Canada.   #FutureFoodCanada #CdnAgDay

World Engineering Day is more than a celebration it is a clarion call to action. Today, we salute Agricultural Engineers who stand at the frontline of Nigeria’s fight for food security and economic resilience. Yet celebration must quickly give way to responsibility. Nigeria cannot continue to battle low productivity, heavy post-harvest losses, and labor-intensive farming while depending on imported machinery that is costly, ill-suited, and difficult to maintain. The time has come to confront our agricultural mechanization crisis with bold, homegrown engineering solutions. Agricultural Engineers must rise beyond theory and titles. Graduates of Agricultural Engineering should be able to design, fabricate, assemble, and deploy farm implements that respond directly to the realities of our fields. The swampy rice belts, the savannah grain corridors, and the rainforest root-crop zones each demand distinct mechanization strategies. A uniform approach will not suffice. What Nigeria needs are machines built for our soils, our crops, our climate, and our scale of farming—durable, affordable, adaptable, and locally serviceable. Looking inward is no longer optional; it is urgent. Universities, polytechnics, research institutes, and private workshops must become production hubs of innovation. Young engineers must transition from job seekers to solution creators, from consumers of foreign technology to manufacturers of indigenous systems. On this World Engineering Day, the charge is clear: engineer Nigeria’s agricultural transformation from the ground up. Fabricate the future. Assemble progress. Deliver tools that will power every agricultural zone toward productivity, prosperity, and national pride. 🌱 Real learning begins when theory meets the field. Back in 2023, I had the opportunity to complete Intensive Training on Agricultural Mechanization at the Southern Region Farm Machinery Training and Testing Institute (SRFMTTI), Government of India, under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare. During this training, I gained hands-on exposure to: 🚜 Operation and maintenance of tractors ⚙️ Adjustment and use of different agricultural implements 🌾 Understanding the importance of Soil Health Cards in modern farming For me, this experience was more than just a certificate. It was a chance to understand how technology and machinery are transforming agriculture and supporting farmers in the field. Grateful for the opportunity to learn from experts and explore the practical side of agricultural engineering and mechanization. Excited to continue learning and contributing to the future of smart and sustainable agriculture. 🚀🌾 #AgriculturalEngineering #FarmMechanization #AgriTech #SustainableAgriculture #LearningJourney #FutureOfFarming #SkillDevelopment

Next stop on our weekly "tour" of campus… the High Pressure Processing (HPP) Validation Center! Welcome to one of the most groundbreaking spots on campus. While traditional food‑safety methods rely on heat, Cornell’s High Pressure Processing Validation Center uses pure pressure up to 87,000 psi, which is more than the force at the bottom of the deepest ocean trench, to inactivate harmful microbes without cooking the food. The result is fresher flavor, cleaner labels, and longer shelf life. This facility is the first commercial‑scale HPP validation center housed inside a Biohazard Level 2 laboratory, making it a national resource for food innovation. From startup sauces and dips to household‑name juice brands, entrepreneurs across the country come here to validate their products, strengthen food safety, and bring higher‑quality foods to market. HPP can be used for: Juices & beverages Fruit & vegetable purées Meat products Dips & spreads Baby food …and much more. Stay tuned for next week’s tour stop. There is plenty more innovation to explore across campus!
