The Strait of Hormuz just reminded the world that not just oil but food security is also a geopolitical problem. The US and Israel launched strikes on Iran and within hours, Iran's IRGC closed the Strait of Hormuz — and shipping traffic went to near zero. The world fixated on oil. But here's what most people missed: Approximately 33% of the world's fertilizer supply transits the Strait of Hormuz — with exports from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iraq, and Iran all dependent on that single waterway. And unlike oil, there is no strategic reserve to buffer the shortfall. Urea prices have climbed 27%. Ammonia is up 16%. Phosphate up 6%. And it's happening right at the start of the Northern Hemisphere's spring planting season. This is what a fragile global food system looks like under pressure. But here's what this moment also reveals: the farmers who will be hurt most are the ones who were already being failed before this crisis began. Africa's nearly 600 million smallholder farmers — who produce the majority of the continent's food — were already spending just $8 billion annually on inputs. US farmers, 200x fewer in number, spend $100 billion. Not because African farmers don't need inputs. Because they couldn't access the up front capital to buy them. Now input prices are spiking globally. Supply chains are fracturing. And the farmers with the least financial resilience are the most exposed. This is exactly why we built UfarmX ® (Techstars '24). We're not a charity. We're infrastructure. We built a patented AI credit scoring system that makes individual smallholder farmers lendable — without collateral, without a bank, without waiting for geopolitics to cooperate. Through our agro-dealer networks across Nigeria and Senegal we're enabling farmers to pre-position themselves with access to inputs before the next shock arrives. Sub-10% default rates. $6.8M in agricultural financing facilitated. And a B2B model designed to scale without a debt facility. The question was never whether African farmers would gain access to credit. The question is who builds the infrastructure before the next crisis makes it existential. We're building it now. #FoodSecurity #AfricanAgriculture #Agritech #UfarmX #StraitOfHormuz #Fertilizer #GlobalFoodCrisis #SmallholderFarmers #CreditInfrastructure #Impact

🔥 What if Farmers Could Improve Soil Fertility for 100+ Years with One Application? Sounds unrealistic? But this is exactly the promise of Biochar — a carbon-rich soil amendment that is gaining global attention in regenerative agriculture. Yet most discussions online miss the science and real field trial results. 🌱 What is Biochar? Biochar is a stable, carbon-rich material produced when organic biomass (crop residues, wood chips, husk, manure, etc.) is heated in a low-oxygen process called Pyrolysis. Unlike ash, biochar retains a porous carbon structure, similar to a sponge. This structure allows it to: ✔ Retain water ✔ Hold nutrients ✔ Improve microbial activity ✔ Sequester carbon for decades to centuries The concept originates from the fertile soils of the Amazon known as Terra Preta, created by ancient indigenous communities. 📊 What Do Field Trials Actually Show? Multiple studies from the International Biochar Initiative, Food and Agriculture Organization, and universities worldwide report the following trends when biochar is used properly: 1️⃣ Improved Soil Structure Biochar increases soil porosity and aggregation, which improves aeration and root penetration. 📌 Especially beneficial in sandy soils and degraded soils. 2️⃣ Higher Water Retention Biochar’s microporous structure can hold 3–5 times its weight in water, helping crops tolerate drought stress. Field trials show improved soil moisture retention in rainfed agriculture systems. 3️⃣ Nutrient Retention & Reduced Leaching Biochar has a high cation exchange capacity (CEC). 4️⃣ Yield Improvements (When Applied Correctly) Meta-analysis of hundreds of trials shows: 📈 Average crop yield increase: 10–25% But the response depends on: • Soil type • Crop type • Biochar feedstock • Application rate • Fertilizer integration Biochar works best when combined with organic manure or compost. 5️⃣ Carbon Sequestration & Climate Impact Biochar is one of the few agricultural practices that can remove carbon from the atmosphere. It is now recognized in global climate mitigation frameworks and carbon farming initiatives. ⚠️ Common Mistake Farmers Make Many people apply raw biochar directly to soil. This can temporarily immobilize nitrogen. Best practice: ✔ Pre-charge biochar with • Compost • Cow dung slurry • Vermicompost tea • Liquid biofertilizers before field application. 🌾 Crops Showing Good Response in Trials especially in acidic or nutrient-poor soils. 💡 The Real Takeaway Biochar is not a miracle fertilizer. But when used correctly, it acts as a soil conditioner + carbon bank + microbial habitat. That’s why many scientists now call it: “A long-term soil investment.” 💬 Question for Farmers & Researchers Have you tested biochar in real farm conditions? What was your application method and crop response? #Biochar #SustainableFarming #CarbonFarming #Agriculture #Agritech
