This is the time when farmers are bringing their produce to the markets, but a large portion of it never reaches consumers. In India, 15–30% of fruits, vegetables, grains, and pulses are lost post-harvest, amounting to ₹1.5 lakh crore (~$18 billion) annually.
The reason? Poor Infrastructure.
Lack of cold storage, inefficient transport, fragmented supply chains, and limited processing facilities mean that fresh produce spoils before it can be sold. Farmers often have to sell at distress prices, while consumers face unpredictable availability and prices.
Technology and infrastructure can change this reality:
-Cold storage and refrigerated transport to extend shelf life
-AI & IoT for predictive monitoring to prevent spoilage
-Smart supply chains connecting farmers directly to markets
-On-farm or near-farm processing to preserve value
By reducing post-harvest loss, we can increase farmers’ incomes, improve food security, and create a more efficient food system. It’s time to rethink the way India moves, stores, and delivers its produce, from farm to fork.
