"From Policy to Profit: How Government Schemes Shape India’s Agritech Startups"
Indian startups' stories are typically informed by rounds of funding, unicorn statuses and new technologies. However, as a startup in the agritech sector, government policy can make a difference as much as private investment. Start-up agriculture is a tough business to break into. The farmers are geographically scattered, holdings are small in size, incomes are unpredictable and adoption of technology is a function of trust. The cost of last-mile delivery is high in the case of startups, and trusted farm-level information is limited, as well as the poor infrastructure in rural areas and scaling the pilot projects to make a viable business.Some of these barriers can be lessened by government schemes.
The financial and technical support to startups is provided through RKVY under the Innovation and Agri-Entrepreneurship Development programme in the idea, prototype and early growth stage of the startups. Incubators also connect with mentors and testing facilities, agricultural institutions.
The Startup India's Seed Fund Scheme and AgriSURE fund are other measures that enhance access to early-stage funding. These schemes are significant since the benefits of agritech products tend to take a few cycles to be proven. But the number of startups supported is not the only measure of government support. How successful these companies will be in both their continuity after the completion of the grant and their impact on farmers will be the only real measure of their success.
A subsidy cannot build farmer confidence, it can help to build a prototype. Crop stress can be detected by a drone but again, this will rely on skilled staff and service that is cost-effective. Predictions can be generated by an AI platform, but these predictions can be useful only if the data is accurate and localised. Hence, it is required to have the next generation of policy – outcome-based funding, interoperable agriculture data, public procurement and cooperative and farmer-producer organisation partnerships that are conducive to startups.Government programs shall not only provide more businesses in the agritech sector. They should be key in developing enterprises that have a major impact on on-farm problems in actual situations.
The future of Indian agritech is still a question: "Is it possible to bring innovation to impact, that is affordable, reliable and farmer-led, through public policy?
