Nvidia just bought Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Here's why smallholder farmers should care. The AI quietly transforming African agriculture, crop disease detection from a phone photo, yield prediction from satellite imagery, credit scoring for farmers with no bank statements, mostly runs on open-source models. Models a small team can download, fine-tune on local crops and local data, and deploy without a Silicon Valley budget. Hugging Face was the front door to all of that. Now the world's biggest chipmaker owns it. Maybe nothing changes. Nvidia profits when more people build. But agriculture in emerging markets has learned this lesson before with seeds and fertilizer: when the inputs get consolidated, the smallest players pay the price. For those of us building AI for smallholder finance, the takeaway is clear: Fine-tune and own your models. A crop-yield model trained on Ethiopian teff or Kenyan maize is an asset no acquisition can take from you. The real moat was never the base model, it's the local data and the trust of the farmers behind it. The next decade of agricultural AI in Africa shouldn't depend on decisions made in a boardroom in Santa Clara. #AgriTech #AI #FinancialInclusion #Smallholders #Africa #AgriFinance

The biggest lesson I learned from Sara Menker: She didn't build an AI company. She built a company that helps people make better decisions. Agriculture has no shortage of data. People don't pay for AI. They pay for confidence. #Agritech #AI #Startups https://t.co/EGLs23Tdnm

Had the opportunity to be part of the Hult Prize Competition, where our team pitched CropKeep. The problem we set out to solve: post-harvest losses. A massive chunk of what farmers grow never makes it to market simply because there's no affordable way to store it right after harvest. CropKeep's mission was simple but critical — give farmers access to accessible micro-cold storage solutions, so less of their hard work goes to waste. We didn't make it to the finals, but this was our first real pitch competition, and it taught us a lot — how to think through a business model properly, how to defend an idea under pressure, and how much a problem statement changes once you actually try to solve it end-to-end. Taking the feedback seriously and figuring out where CropKeep needs to improve. Still early days, but excited to keep building in this space. Huge thanks to the organizers, and to my teammates Narayan Shaw and Nishu Kumar for the hustle. Onwards and upwards. #HultPrize #Entrepreneurship #Startup #AgriTech #FirstEvent

There was a time when energy was largely viewed as another operating cost. But in these times, with increasing energy costs, it is now a strategic business decision. For food, beverage and agritech businesses, energy impacts productivity, resilience, capital investment, profits, and long-term competitiveness. As a result of conversations in this space, Foodeast Haumako is working with EECA and Unison to better understand how businesses can be supported if they want to review energy options. One theme emerging from those conversations is that businesses are looking beyond individual technologies and asking broader questions. ·     What options are realistic? ·     What technology is proven? ·     What level of investment might be required? ·     What could make sense for their operation over the next 10 or 20 years? For Hawke's Bay, the discussion has another dimension. The region produces forestry residues, processing by-products and other organic materials that may fit into the region's energy mix. That doesn't make biomass the answer for every business. But it does make it one of a number of options worth understanding alongside electrification, energy efficiency and other technologies. Foodeast Haumako's role isn't to promote one solution over another. It's to help owners and managers connect with reliable information, practical expertise and the right conversations so they can work out the best option for their own business.

Day two at Cultivate '26. One thing that's become clear from the conversations happening on the show floor is that the most valuable ones aren't the polished presentations. They're the conversations where growers start talking about what's actually holding up a project. A rebate application that's been sitting in review for weeks. A retrofit quote that changed after the electrician reviewed the existing electrical infrastructure. A lighting plan that made sense two expansions ago but hasn't been revisited since. That's the good stuff. It's a lot easier to solve a problem once someone stops saying everything is fine and just names what's getting in the way. More than a few growers have mentioned they've been meaning to look into rebate eligibility for months, sometimes more than a year, but just never made the call. Those kinds of things tend to stay on the back burner until someone takes the time to walk through them. If you're at Cultivate and haven't stopped by yet, today and tomorrow morning are your opportunity. The Thrive Agritech team is at Booth 3716. If you'd like an introduction, send me a message. I'll connect you with whoever is available or point you in the right direction on the floor. Some of the best conversations this week have started with someone walking up and asking a straightforward question about their facility.

Most agri-tech apps fail at the last mile for two reasons: they are English-centric, and they are text-first. Millions of regional-language, low-literacy farmers are completely locked out of the AI revolution. To bridge this gap, Ritik Gupta and I built Chaupal.AI competing under the Climate & Sustainability Systems theme and the Sarvam AI track. 🚀 Presenting Chaupal.AI Traditionally, a Chaupal is the village gathering space where farmers meet to discuss problems and make critical community decisions. Chaupal.AI brings that collective decision-making space online. We don't just serve raw, confusing data; we return confident, actionable decisions. What it does: 🎙️ Speak a question in 5+ Indian languages → hear a spoken answer back 📸 Photo → AI crop disease diagnosis + treatment 🎯 Farm risk score, weather intelligence & govt scheme finder 📊 500K-record analytics pipeline (BigQuery + NVIDIA RAPIDS, 22.58× faster) The full voice experience (STT → LLM → TTS) runs entirely on @Sarvam AI — exactly where Indian-language AI shines. 🌍 Climate & Sustainability. Proud to have built this with Ritik Gupta 💪 🔗 Live demo: https://lnkd.in/dEUEXPXp 💻 GitHub: https://lnkd.in/dvfhqmP7 Sarvam NAMESPACE #HACKHAZARDS #SarvamAI #AgriTech

#Matcha #Japon #IGP #Sourcing #FoodIndustry
