Nvidia just bought Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Here's why smallholder farmers should care. The AI quietly transforming African agriculture, crop disease detection from a phone photo, yield prediction from satellite imagery, credit scoring for farmers with no bank statements, mostly runs on open-source models. Models a small team can download, fine-tune on local crops and local data, and deploy without a Silicon Valley budget. Hugging Face was the front door to all of that. Now the world's biggest chipmaker owns it. Maybe nothing changes. Nvidia profits when more people build. But agriculture in emerging markets has learned this lesson before with seeds and fertilizer: when the inputs get consolidated, the smallest players pay the price. For those of us building AI for smallholder finance, the takeaway is clear: Fine-tune and own your models. A crop-yield model trained on Ethiopian teff or Kenyan maize is an asset no acquisition can take from you. The real moat was never the base model, it's the local data and the trust of the farmers behind it. The next decade of agricultural AI in Africa shouldn't depend on decisions made in a boardroom in Santa Clara. #AgriTech #AI #FinancialInclusion #Smallholders #Africa #AgriFinance

Determining the exact Dry Rubber Content (DRC) of natural rubber latex has always been a tedious, time-consuming process. Traditionally, it requires laboratory testing, chemical coagulation, and hours of drying—creating bottlenecks for farmers and manufacturers who need quick, accurate pricing and quality control. I wanted to solve this bottleneck. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been working on applying Deep Learning to modernize this process. I developed a computer vision pipeline that can accurately predict the DRC percentage directly from images of rubber samples. Here is how the solution works under the hood: 🔹 Built and trained a PyTorch-based neural network architecture optimized for image analysis. 🔹 Implemented 12-view Test-Time Augmentation (TTA) to ensure the predictions are highly robust and reliable regardless of image orientation. 🔹 Packaged the inference model into a blazing-fast FastAPI backend. 🔹 Designed a clean, accessible web application so anyone can drag, drop, and get real-time DRC predictions instantly without needing a lab. By turning a slow physical process into a rapid digital one, we can reduce waste, ensure fairer compensation for rubber tappers, and streamline manufacturing pipelines. If you're interested in the technical implementation, the architecture, or want to test the web interface yourself, I've open-sourced the solution. You can check out the codebase and methodology here: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dF9tNa4W Would love to hear thoughts from anyone working at the intersection of Agriculture and AI! #MachineLearning #DeepLearning #PyTorch #AgriTech #ComputerVision #FastAPI #ProblemSolving #AI

Spent yesterday at the Royal Welsh Show — one of 50,000 people through the gate on the day — talking connectivity with a room full of people who deal with the consequences of coverage gaps every day: Powys County Council, Ceredigion County Council, the Tyfu Canolbarth Cymru | Growing Mid Wales programme team, Aberystwyth University and private sector organisations and more. Credit to the Tyfu Canolbarth Cymru | Growing Mid Wales team, Dave Owen and Clifford Shapland, for pulling that room together. What struck me wasn't the technology conversation — it was how quickly it became a place conversation. Digital divide isn't an abstract policy line for this room. It's whether a young family stays in Powys or leaves for Cardiff. Whether a farm can run the sensors and data tools that make agritech viable, or gets locked out of a productivity shift everyone else has access to. Whether a business can actually operate from Mid Wales on the same basis as in London, rather than just being registered there. Rural connectivity gets discussed as an infrastructure problem. In that room, it was clearly an economic one — the difference between a place-based investment programme delivering on its ambitions, and one that quietly stalls because the basic conditions for growth aren't there. We talked through where enhanced mobile coverage and 5G Standalone actually fit into that — real-time data off-farm, service delivery that doesn't assume everyone can reach a building in person, and the reliability a business needs before committing capital to a rural location over a city one. There's a broader shift too: networks built for AI workloads need lower latency and dedicated capacity, not just best-effort connections. Vodafone Business became first in the UK to offer commercial 5G network slicing on a Standalone network earlier this year — exactly this shift in practice. Worth asking what "AI-ready" really requires at the network layer, not just the software layer. Good to see this much alignment across sectors on what actually matters here. Curious what others are seeing on the ground in rural Wales or similar regions — is connectivity keeping pace with what these places actually need, or is the gap still widening? #AgriTech #RuralEconomy #DigitalDivide #DigitalTransformation #5GSA #VodafoneBusiness Iain Milligan, James Gordon, Raymond Cassar

Tiny Greens. Massive Potential. 🌱 Sometimes the smallest crops make the biggest impact. Microgreens are harvested just days after germination, yet they can be packed with flavor, nutrients, and commercial value. They require minimal space, relatively little water, and have a quick production cycle—making them an attractive option for urban farming, home growers, restaurants, and entrepreneurs. As agricultural professionals, it's important that we don't only think about large-scale production. We should also embrace innovations that make farming more accessible, profitable, and sustainable. Microgreens remind us that agriculture isn't always about having more land—it's about maximizing the potential of the space and resources available. I'm excited about the opportunities microgreens present in food production, nutrition, and agribusiness, and I look forward to exploring more ways they can contribute to resilient farming systems. What do you think is the biggest opportunity for microgreens in your community? #Microgreens #Agriculture #UrbanFarming #Agribusiness #FoodSecurity #SustainableAgriculture #Hydroponics #AgriculturalInnovation #AgriTech #Kenya
