    Nvidia just bought Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Here's why smallholder farmers should care. The AI quietly transforming African agriculture, crop disease detection from a phone photo, yield prediction from satellite imagery, credit scoring for farmers with no bank statements, mostly runs on open-source models. Models a small team can download, fine-tune on local crops and local data, and deploy without a Silicon Valley budget. Hugging Face was the front door to all of that. Now the world's biggest chipmaker owns it. Maybe nothing changes. Nvidia profits when more people build. But agriculture in emerging markets has learned this lesson before with seeds and fertilizer: when the inputs get consolidated, the smallest players pay the price. For those of us building AI for smallholder finance, the takeaway is clear: Fine-tune and own your models. A crop-yield model trained on Ethiopian teff or Kenyan maize is an asset no acquisition can take from you. The real moat was never the base model, it's the local data and the trust of the farmers behind it.     [GRAPHIQUE 1] L’été 2026 est, de loin, le + chaud jamais observé en France, devançant 2003 de 0,8°C. Seulement 5 jours sous les normales, contre 86 au-dessus. Il laisse derrière lui une agriculture en lambeaux et des écosystèmes à l’agonie. Le froid durable sous les normes n'existe clairement plus depuis 5 ans en France. Avec +3.8°C en juin, +3.7°C en juillet et +3.3°C en août, jamais la France n'avait enchainé de telles anomalies. Et la chaleur fera son reto ur dès le début du mois de septembre, de façon durable, notamment dans le sud de la France… L’été météorologique s’achève, mais nous sommes loin d’être tirés d’affaire. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [GRAPHIQUE 2, CARTE 3 et CARTE 4] En termes d’intensité, la sécheresse de 2026 (courbe noir du graphique) est clairement la plus intense jamais observée en France à l’échelle nationale. À l’échelle régionale, le constat est tout aussi exceptionnel : du Poitou jusqu’à l’Alsace, une vaste partie du pays connaît la sécheresse la plus intense jamais enregistrée (rouge sur la carte). Le retour des pluies ces dix derniers jours a permis de limiter un peu la casse. Mais le répit pourrait être de courte durée : avec le retour de la chaleur début septembre, la sécheresse pourrait de nouveau atteindre des niveaux records pour cette période de l’année (sous 2022 et 1976). En terme de sévérité (intensité * durée), on ne peut pas encore se prononcer, la sécheresse 2026 étant encore loin d'être terminée.

    Je pense que l’on peut désormais affirmer que la France traverse la plus grandes catastrophe agricole nationale depuis 1945. Sans aide publique, 30 000 à 35 000 exploitations pourraient se retrouver en situation de faillite, soit près de 10 % des exploitations agricoles françaises. C’est monstrueux. Le constat devient donc difficile à éviter : notre modèle agricole n’est pas suffisamment préparé au changement climatique qui arrive. C’est aussi le résultat d’un échec politique collectif : les gouvernements successifs n’ont pas suffisamment pris la mesure de l’ampleur des bouleversements que le changement climatique impose déjà, et imposera demain, à notre agriculture. Voici 3 propositions nationales pour adapter notre agriculture au changement climatique.

🥭 Why Bengal’s Mango Orchards Need AI-Powered Harvesting—And Why We’re Building It Growing up in West Bengal, I have always admired the pride that our mango orchards bring to the state. From the world-famous Himsagar to Langra, Lakshmanbhog, and Fazli, Bengal produces some of India’s finest mangoes. Yet, one crucial part of the value chain has barely changed in decades. Harvesting is still largely manual. Workers climb tall trees with bamboo ladders, hooks, and nets. It is physically demanding, time-consuming, and risky. Many fruits are bruised or damaged before they even reach the market. At the same time, orchard owners are finding it increasingly difficult to secure skilled labour during the short harvesting season. As founders of RaSalo Technologies, we asked ourselves a simple question: What if harvesting could become as intelligent as the fruit itself? That question has become our mission. What if language inclusion became an innovation strategy not merely a content strategy? I recently came across a post by Kiran Shah about hiring people who may not speak English fluently, but can think, communicate and create naturally in their mother tongue. I genuinely liked the perspective. This approach can do much more than increase the volume of regional-language content. It can uncover talented people whose ideas are often overlooked simply because they cannot express them confidently in English. Language does not only influence how we communicate. It shapes how we observe problems, understand communities and imagine solutions. Consider AgriTech. We regularly discuss using technology, data and AI to transform Indian agriculture. Yet many of these solutions are conceptualised in English by teams that may have limited familiarity with the languages, contexts and everyday realities of the farmers they are designing for. We think in English, prepare strategies in English and then translate the final interface for farmers who think and work in Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Hindi and many other languages. But translation is not the same as understanding. What could emerge if people from these communities were involved from the beginning—not merely as translators or users, but as researchers, creators, product thinkers and decision-makers? - They may identify problems we have never noticed. - They may design workflows that feel natural to local users. - They may create systems that operate in the recipient’s own language while still offering national connectivity and scale. This thinking can support regional businesses, improve technology adoption and bring new ideas from communities that have remained underrepresented in mainstream innovation. Perhaps the real opportunity is not simply to take an English idea and translate it into multiple languages. It is to allow ideas to originate in multiple languages and then connect them through technology. That would be meaningful innovation - innovation that advances businesses, empowers communities and strengthens national integration. I’m agritech till forever, and here’s the honest reason why. Why should I go and farm when the farmer already owns that skill — and lacks the basic things to do what he’s best at? That’s not my job to duplicate. That’s my job to fix. The farmer can’t do what I do, and I can’t do what he or she does. So my work is building the framework that lets both of us grow. Tech is the premise for that framework — not the point of it. Strip away the buzzwords and all an agritech does amounts to two things: better production, and real markets for what gets produced. The tech gets inputs to the farmer. It pays them. It ships the trucks to buyers. That’s the whole job. A smallholder can’t raise $1 million in this life or the next. Neither can an aggregator. One of my earliest theses when we started building was that the purchasing power of aggregators wouldn’t sustain them long term. Nine years on (period from before to after Agriarche)— boy, was I right. If money has come into agriculture and we still have these problems, it means the money didn’t go to the right hands. I wouldn’t say roads and infrastructure don’t pitch well — I’d say the path to infrastructure financing is visibility and transparency into the system. No vagueness. Tech is the enabler of that visibility, not a replacement for the road itself. Yes, because the sector is inherently vague, there will always be things that look like the solution but aren’t. That doesn’t take away from the struggles of the genuine companies before us — it shows we’re in touch with the reality of this market. Process alignment and clear accountability are what give people enough visibility to trust the sector and direct capital where it’s needed. It’s not until we do this work that the roads, the schools, the water, the logistics get fixed sustainably. I say this as one of the few agritechs that has actually raised money: it isn’t easy for us compared to other sectors, and if we don’t level up our frameworks, the money will find who is ready. It exists — but it follows structure. We’re the ones on the scene now. It’s the way we run the one truck a day, today, that determines whether infrastructure financing ever finds the right hands. There’s work to do. I stand on this hill forever. Agritech is the only way.
