What will the next generation of bioprocessing look like? This was the focus of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) “Novel Technologies in Bioprocessing” conference, which explored emerging technologies and strategies across biopharma, biotechnology, food and cosmetics. Bringing together expertise from industry and academia, the event highlighted innovative approaches to bioprocess development, technology, scale-up and sustainable manufacturing.
These themes are highly relevant to our work at CCAP, where biological resources, algal biotechnology, scale-up, and analytical capabilities come together. At the conference, our CCAP Manager and SAMS Researcher, Michael Ross, explored how CCAP's collection, services, and infrastructure support innovation in algal and microbial biotechnology and bioprocessing.
The conference’s focus was on novel bioprocessing. Mikey’s talk introduced the enormous biological and chemical diversity that CCAP maintains in its living collection. However, most of the talk focused on how the CCAP-ARIES facility can bring together algal scale-up and downstream processing, molecular capability, and analytical capability within a single facility. This integrated approach can help expedite your research and derisk your innovation. Mikey also presented some case studies on the internal and wider research use of the CCAP ARIES facility. The talk concluded with an overview of ongoing research relevant to the conference and horizon scanning. This included the Natural Products BioHUB; one of five UKRI Green Economy Centres. The NP BioHUB is exploring the diversity of algae and fungi to support the development of natural products for biotechnology and agritech. This is in partnership with Swansea University / Prifysgol Abertawe, CABI, Scottish Association For Marine Science and CCAP.
From a personal perspective, Mikey was thrilled to be invited to participate in the conference. It was inspiring to gain valuable insights into the technologies and approaches shaping the future of bioprocessing. Topics including gas fermentation, membrane filtration, AI-supported decision-making, continuous chromatography and sustainable scale-up offered perspectives that could inform biotechnology and other areas of biomanufacturing. The IChemE BESIG seems like a great initiative and offers a lot of support to industry, academia and students with a variety of bursaries, workshops, and regular webinars.
