Nvidia just bought Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Here's why smallholder farmers should care. The AI quietly transforming African agriculture, crop disease detection from a phone photo, yield prediction from satellite imagery, credit scoring for farmers with no bank statements, mostly runs on open-source models. Models a small team can download, fine-tune on local crops and local data, and deploy without a Silicon Valley budget. Hugging Face was the front door to all of that. Now the world's biggest chipmaker owns it. Maybe nothing changes. Nvidia profits when more people build. But agriculture in emerging markets has learned this lesson before with seeds and fertilizer: when the inputs get consolidated, the smallest players pay the price. For those of us building AI for smallholder finance, the takeaway is clear: Fine-tune and own your models. A crop-yield model trained on Ethiopian teff or Kenyan maize is an asset no acquisition can take from you. The real moat was never the base model, it's the local data and the trust of the farmers behind it. The next decade of agricultural AI in Africa shouldn't depend on decisions made in a boardroom in Santa Clara. #AgriTech #AI #FinancialInclusion #Smallholders #Africa #AgriFinance

Agritech: The Next Frontier of Skill Development in Odisha As part of the World Skill Center (WSC) team, it was a privilege to be part of the Consultation Workshop on Odisha's Agritech Workforce and Skill Development, organized by the Government of Odisha and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under the Odisha Skill Development Project (OSDP-II). Having been associated with OSDP since Phase-I and now contributing to OSDP-II, this consultation reinforced my belief that Agritech will be one of the strongest drivers of future skills, employment and entrepreneurship in Odisha. This consultation reinforced my belief that skill development is becoming the strongest enabler of agricultural transformation. The proposed World Skill Center for AgriTech, Sambalpur has the potential to become much more than another training institution. It can become a centre that: 💡develops future-ready agritech professionals, 💡nurtures rural entrepreneurs, 💡supports Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), 💡strengthens startups and innovation, 💡creates employment across the agritech value chain, and 💡empowers youth from Western Odisha with globally relevant skills. The future of agriculture will not depend only on better farming—it will depend on how effectively we integrate technology, AI, drones, IoT, precision agriculture, climate-smart practices and sustainable farming with a skilled workforce. No single institution can achieve this transformation alone. It requires a strong ecosystem where Government, industry, startups, academia, financial institutions and development partners work together to create industry-relevant skills and meaningful career pathways for our youth. If we build the right talent pipeline today, we will not only empower our youth but also accelerate technology adoption in agriculture, improve farmers' productivity and income, and contribute meaningfully towards the vision of Viksit Odisha 2036 and Viksit Bharat 2047. I am excited to see this vision taking shape and proud to be part of an institution that is helping build the future of Odisha's skill ecosystem. The future of agriculture is not just about growing crops. It is about growing talent, innovation and opportunities. #Agritech #WorldSkillCenter #SkilledInOdisha #OSDP #SDTE #AsianDevelopmentBank #NABARD #GovernmentOfOdisha #SkillDevelopment #TVET #FutureSkills #YouthEmployability #SustainableAgriculture #FPOs #Incubators #DigitalAgriculture #AI #Innovation #Entrepreneurship #Startup #NSDC #GreenFarming #ViksitOdisha2036 #ViksitBharat2047 #SkillIndia #MSDE #IndustryAcademia #NSQF #NCVET

I've built 5+ ventures. Two successful exits later, I'm investing in founders most people overlook. Today I'm launching VentureNest. An early-stage fund for pre-seed and seed founders building in Fintech, B2B SaaS, Consumer and D2C, Healthtech, AgriTech, and AI. But here's the real reason I'm doing this. When I started as a first-generation entrepreneur, I had no family business to fall back on, no investor uncle, and no one to tell me what actually mattered. I built anyway: 5+ companies. 2 exits. A few of them nearly wiped me out before they worked. For the last 10 years, I've backed founders with both big and small cheques. I wasn't running a fund, but I remembered what it felt like to build when nobody was in your corner. VentureNest is simply a way to do that at a bigger scale: → Capital for founders at the stage when almost nobody wants to write the first check → Mentorship from someone who's actually built, not just advised → Help with hiring, positioning, and the first-year challenges that matter most 📍Most funds show up once you've already proven the model. 📍VentureNest shows up when the idea still sounds crazy to everyone but the founder. The founders who need this the most are often the ones investors never get to meet. They're building from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, without warm introductions or the networks that open doors. That's exactly who I'm looking for. What's one startup idea you've seen die simply because nobody gave it a chance?

Growing food 0.7 miles underground The UK’s newest vertical farming milestone   The University of Sheffield has launched what’s now the world’s deepest vertical farm, 0.7 miles underground in a North Yorkshire mine. It’s an interesting step for sustainable food production, using stable underground temperatures to grow crops without the huge energy bills that challenge many vertical farming models.   Early trials are already producing lettuce and pak choi, with the next phase exploring higher‑value halophytic crops like samphire, sea fennel and quinoa. If the model works, the team believes thousands of disused mines could be repurposed for affordable, low‑energy food production.   A good example of how UK research, agri-tech and socially-driven producers like Farm Urban are testing new ways to make controlled-environment agriculture commercially viable.     #FoodTech #AgriTech #VerticalFarming #SustainableFood

The pilots that reach production don't have better models. They have five conditions confirmed in writing before the first field trial. None of the five are about the algorithm. ─ 1️⃣ Name the KPI > Not "better decisions." A named, measurable farm outcome. > Yield per hectare, spray cost per acre, compliance report completion. 2️⃣ Confirm the data is production-grade > One full growing season of machine-readable data. > If gaps exist across CLAAS, John Deere, or CNH systems: > The pilot timeline moves. > The data standard does not. 3️⃣ Check the workflow integration. > Adoption removes a step from the agronomist's decision process. > It does not add one. > If the demo requires opening a second application, > The integration is not built. 4️⃣ Set the trust clock expectation. > Season 1 is not the ROI season. > Measure recommendation acceptance rate override frequency. > Full operational autonomy is a Season 3 conversation. 5️⃣ Run the off-switch test. > Document what changes if the system is switched off in month 3. > If the answer is - nothing - the operating model is undefined. ─ Based on analysis of MIT's NANDA research 👀 Find our full article about agritech AI pilot traps on our blog! ─ 📩 DM me and I'll send the full checklist as a one-page PDF you can bring to your next pilot kick-off.
