Precision farming is an engineering problem first. 🚜⚙️ Data tells you what a field needs. Engineers build the machines that deliver it, in the right place, at the right rate. The engineering behind precision farming: 1️⃣ Sensing. Soil moisture probes, NPK and pH sensors, and machine-mounted optical sensors turn field conditions into signals. Placement, calibration and durability in harsh field conditions are all design challenges. 2️⃣ Positioning and guidance. GNSS auto-steer keeps tractors on exact paths. Less overlap means lower fuel use, less compaction and fewer wasted inputs. 3️⃣ Control systems. Variable-rate technology adjusts seed, fertiliser or spray output as the machine moves through a field. This needs controllers, actuators, flow valves and metering systems working in sync. 4️⃣ Smart irrigation. Sensor-triggered pumps, valves and drip networks deliver water by need, not by schedule. Hydraulic design and energy supply (including solar) decide whether it works on the ground. 5️⃣ Automation. Autonomous tractors, robotic implements and spraying drones depend on mechanical reliability, power systems and safe operation. 6️⃣ Maintenance. The best machine is useless when it's broken down mid-season. Diagnostics, preventive maintenance and repair skills matter as much as the technology itself. Reliability is where field performance is won or lost. The challenge for Africa: technology must be affordable, repairable locally, and suited to small and medium farms. Engineering that can't be maintained on-site doesn't last. The headline number was largely driven by Simple Energy’s $180 Mn Series C round, making up nearly 77% of the total funding raised during the week. 𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗱: • Gravity — $15 Mn • Seeds Fincap — $10.4 Mn • Balwaan Krishi — $10.4 Mn • Arivihan — $10.2 Mn • EDT — $2.4 Mn • Banglore Watch Company — $1.4 Mn The funding was spread across sectors including EVs, PropTech, fintech, agritech, EdTech, ecommerce, healthtech and SaaS. However, the funding picture was not uniformly strong. While total funding increased 14.9% week-on-week, the number of deals declined 23.8%. Early-stage funding also remained subdued, with seed and pre-seed startups raising just $3.3 Mn across four deals. #india Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit Agricon India at BIEC, Bengaluru, & explore the evolving landscape of agricultural technology, protected cultivation & modern farming solutions. My elder son asked, "Dad why are you visiting an agricultural conference?" I explained,for years, we have grown wheat, mustard and potatoes on our farms in Agra. I am now exploring what else we can grow using polyhouses, drip irrigation and glass polyhouses. With our land approximately 90 minutes from the Noida airport and 30 minutes from the expanding Agra airport, I am also evaluating partnerships that can help us move towards more technology-led farming. The visit offered valuable insights into: 🌱 Protected Cultivation: Polyhouses, greenhouses and shade-net structures that enable controlled environments and potentially improve productivity. 💧 Water Management: Efficient irrigation, fertigation and better utilisation of water resources. 🌾 High-Value Agriculture: Opportunities in vegetables, horticulture, flowers and other crops that may generate better returns per unit of land. 🌷 Crop Cycles: The cultivation requirements of flowers such as tulips and roses, and their potential in controlled environments. 🤖 Technology in Agriculture: How automation, precision farming and digital solutions can improve resource utilisation, efficiency and farm management. 💰 Government Support: Subsidies and support available for polyhouse and protected cultivation projects. 🇳🇱 Global Best Practices: The Netherlands, partner country for the exhibition, offered valuable perspectives on advanced horticulture, protected cultivation and technology-enabled farming. 🤝 Entrepreneurship and Partnerships: Interactions with companies and technology providers helped me understand the investment, infrastructure and operational requirements of modern agriculture. I was particularly inspired by Dr Grewal, a progressive farmer from Sirsa, who highlighted that organic farming is safe for humans, while also noting that traceability remains a significant challenge. Sustainable agriculture will depend not only on how food is produced, but also on our ability to verify source. Agriculture is no longer just about land, labour and monsoons. It increasingly depends on technology, market access, scientific cultivation, efficient resource management, traceability and sound business models. The next step is to evaluate these solutions practically — starting small, validating the economics, understanding market demand and scaling only when the model demonstrates sustainable returns. I believe there is a significant opportunity to combine technology, management, entrepreneurship and agriculture to create sustainable rural livelihoods, reduce post-harvest losses & improve the economic value of agricultural land.
