Boeing already flies on this. A crop that grows only on seawater. No freshwater, no irrigation network, and a seed yield that beats the average US soybean crop by nearly 4 times.
Farmers are scaling commercial fields of Salicornia and specialized quinoa cultivars, irrigated entirely with raw ocean water or brackish desert aquifers. No greenhouse. No freshwater input at all.
Conventional agriculture burns through 70% of the planet's fresh water. Meanwhile 97% of Earth's water sits in the ocean, doing nothing for food production.
The numbers:
→ Halophyte seed oil runs near 30%, nearly 4 times the yield per hectare of the average US soybean crop.
→ Boeing has already grown aviation fuel from halophyte biomass.
→ Chinese researchers grew seawater-irrigated tomatoes, wheat, and rice through 4 straight generations, matching freshwater yields with better taste.
→ Over 800 million hectares of farmland worldwide is already too salted to keep growing conventional crops.
The last number tells the real story. Land written off as dead isn't dead, it's been irrigated with the wrong water.
The constraint every agritech founder optimizes around, fresh water, isn't the constraint at all.
How many resources are you treating as fixed that were never fixed at all?
