A Bulgarian space company just raised $205 million. Here's why that matters for agriculture
EnduroSat, founded in a 25mÂČ attic in Sofia back in 2015, just closed the largest funding round for a Bulgarian company to date, backed by Riot Ventures, Atreides Management, Google Ventures, Founders Fund and the European Innovation Council.
The headline is about satellites. The real story is about data.
EnduroSat's stated goal is to push the cost of space data down from hundreds of dollars per gigabyte to around $1. That single number is what decides how often and how cheaply agronomists and institutions can get fresh satellite imagery of the same field.
As a Sentinel Online Ambassador, this is exactly the kind of shift I track closely. EnduroSat isn't a competitor to Copernicus, it's an industrial partner, contributing to the Sentinel ecosystem through projects like the #Balkan Constellation, explicitly designed for early detection of stress in forests and farmland.
Cheaper, more frequent Earth observation data already underpins precision farming and CAP subsidy monitoring across the EU. As satellite production scales, that infrastructure only gets more accessible, including for small and medium farms that could never afford it before.
I wrote the full breakdown, EnduroSat's history, the funding, and what it actually means for agriculture, on my site. I am inspired. I hope more people believe like Raycho Raychev.
One more thing I want to say, and it's personal. Not long ago, one of the biggest organic processors I know told me that what I'm trying to build here, an actual entrepreneurship innovation ecosystem for agriculture in Bulgaria, simply isn't possible.
I think about Raycho a lot. Nobody handed him a reason to believe a Bulgarian company could build satellites for NASA missions, either. He just kept building anyway.
So I'm choosing to hope like Raycho was hoping.
