— — — 🇬🇧 🌱 September is still under promotion at Holland GreenTech Bénin. It's also a good moment to look back at an article published by Le Matinal on September 11, about our National Open Days on horticulture (September 10-12, Rijk Zwaan demonstration site, IITA Abomey-Calavi). The title chosen by the newsroom sums up our approach well: "Holland Greentech, a bridge between technology and producers." The article covers what was on show over the three days: seeds, drip irrigation, greenhouses, substrates, production equipment and growing techniques. But the point that stands out most is that innovation only works alongside training. Jelila Blalogoé, Holland GreenTech's regional director for West Africa, makes the point that technology and skills transfer to producers can't be separated. Le Matinal also mentions the 10 producers who will get dedicated support to start greenhouse production, and the two horticultural centers being set up in the south and north of Benin. Thanks to Le Matinal for the coverage. 📰 Link to the article in the comments. #GTC2026 #HollandGreentech #Horticulture #Bénin

3 DAYS. Autonomous Vehicle. Top 5. On September 2026, I had the opportunity to participate and secure among the Top 5 teams in the Resonance Hackathon, organized by SCOPE, alongside my teammates Aryaman Bhattacharjee R Kavin, and Rahul Yadav. Among 177 teams and 632 participants, we were shortlisted among the Top 5 teams in the Hardware Track. Our project was AESAR — Autonomous Ecosystem Scouting & Analysis Rover, an AI + IoT-powered agricultural robotics platform designed to move beyond conventional crop monitoring. The core idea was simple: Instead of looking at a crop in isolation, can we understand the ecosystem around it before deciding what intervention is actually required? AESAR combines: > Autonomous navigation and field exploration > Real-time field mapping and spatial awareness > Multi-angle crop imaging > AI-assisted pest and disease analysis > NPM (Non Pesticidal Management) Recommendation > Soil moisture and microclimate monitoring > Pest Defender Ratio (PDR) > Abiotic Microclimate Risk Index (AMRI) > Overall AESA (Agro Ecosystem Analysis) Report Instead, AESAR is being designed around a broader ecosystem-level assessment — considering pest pressure, natural defenders, soil conditions, and microclimate together before recommending an intervention. One of the biggest questions that emerged during development was: How do we observe the entire crop ecosystem when important information exists at different vertical layers of the field? Our next-stage research direction is therefore moving toward a multi-perspective sensing architecture. We are exploring the integration of: > 360° camera and sensor systems → to increase spatial coverage and capture observations beyond a single field of view. > Aerial drone subsystem → to complement the rover by observing the upper canopy/top layer of crops, where ground-based sensing can have limited visibility. > Ground–Aerial Data Fusion → combining observations from different heights, viewpoints and environmental conditions into a unified field representation. There is still a lot to validate: sensor fusion, autonomous coordination, vertical-layer correlation, reliable AI inference, energy efficiency, and real-world field deployment. The 48 hours themselves were a combination of hardware debugging, embedded systems, autonomous navigation, computer vision, AI development, integration failures, and plenty of last-minute problem solving. AESAR is now moving from a hackathon prototype toward a longer-term research and engineering project. More updates as we build the next version. I recently had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Reboot Earth Hackathon organized by the FAO at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q). Our goal was to tackle agricultural challenges specific to arid climates by bridging hardware, AI, and geospatial data to optimize local farming. Here is a breakdown of the smart agriculture system we engineered: AI & Machine Learning: I focused heavily on the model architecture, fine-tuning a qwen3.5-4B LoRa model using Unsloth against a targeted 3,000-row dataset. We unit-tested this locally and integrated extensive agricultural research, including UN-FAO data, to adapt the model specifically for Qatar’s unique soil conditions. IoT & Hardware: We developed a solar-powered Arduino prototype utilizing an ESP32 for wireless WiFi connectivity. It currently uses a soil moisture sensor to capture real-time field data, which we plan to scale into a comprehensive 7-in-1 sensor array. Geospatial Dashboard: We built a dedicated web platform for farmers that ingests the real-time IoT data stream. It leverages GIS data to visualize soil health on geospatial dashboards, alongside detailed line graphs for unit space tracking. Intelligent Chatbot: To make the data actionable, we integrated an AI assistant that analyzes current soil conditions to recommend the optimal crops, suggest specific soil enhancements, and provide insights into current market demand. Building an end-to-end pipeline—from hardware sensors and streaming data to a fine-tuned LLM and a user-facing dashboard—was a fantastic challenge. I’m proud of how our solution empowers farmers with the intelligence needed to make data-driven, sustainable decisions. #RebootTheEarth #UNFAO #CMUQ #Qatar #DataScience #IoT #MachineLearning #SmartFarming #AgriTech #Unsloth #LLM #GIS
