Tuning 4 Years of Agricultural Engineering Theory Into Practical Agricultural Impact 👾 My Friends Md. Emon Mahabub Emu, Ahashan Hosain Mohoshin, and I are building a machine learning model to detect potato leaf diseases (such as Early Blight and Late Blight) using drone images. Here is a simple look at our project pipeline: 1️⃣ Capture: We fly a drone over the potato fields to take high-resolution pictures. 2️⃣ Annotate: We manually label the images, drawing boxes around exactly what is "Healthy" and what is "Early Blight." 3️⃣ Train: We feed these labeled images to an AI model so it learns to spot the diseases on its own. One of the coolest parts of our dataset? We didn't just take pictures from one altitude. We captured images from 2m, 7m, 10m, and 12m in the air! 📏 By training the model on different heights, we are teaching the AI to recognize diseases whether the drone is flying super close to the leaves or scanning from high up in the sky. Right now, I am spending a lot of time on Step 2: Annotation (using Roboflow!). Why is data annotation so important? Think of an AI model like a student preparing for an exam. If you give the student a study guide full of incorrect answers, they will fail the test. In machine learning, the AI only knows what we teach it. If we don't carefully and accurately label exactly where the disease is on the leaf, the model won't learn what to look for. High-quality labels mean a highly accurate model! A huge thank you to our teacher, Md. Shaha Nur Kabir sir, for his incredible guidance, mentorship, and support on this final-year paper. US$50,000 for AI-Powered Climate-Smart Agriculture FAO and Smart Africa have launched the Innovate Africa Challenge 2026, supporting proven AI solutions that can help transform agriculture and strengthen climate resilience. The challenge is looking for startups, innovators and solution developers with mature, scalable technologies addressing real agricultural challenges, including: • Precision agriculture and input optimisation • Crop yield prediction and forecasting • Pest and disease detection • Climate-risk modelling and decision support • Water and natural-resource optimisation The selected solution will receive US$50,000 in deployment and validation support, with the opportunity to test and scale the technology in a real agricultural setting alongside government, FAO and Smart Africa stakeholders.
