Building VASUDHA โ An AI-Powered Smart Farming Assistant
Every meaningful innovation begins with a problem worth solving. For us, that problem was how technology could help farmers monitor their fields, identify crop issues early, and make more informed farming decisions.
As part of our Smart India Hackathon (SIH) journey, we worked on VASUDHA, an AI-powered Smart Farming Assistant designed to bring together hardware-based field monitoring and AI-assisted crop detection.
๐ง Building the Hardware Prototype
One of the most exciting parts of this journey was developing our hardware prototype using a Raspberry Pi 3B+ and multiple sensors to monitor soil moisture, temperature, humidity, light intensity, and rainfall-related conditions.
From interfacing sensors to troubleshooting connections and working on data collection, this experience helped us understand the practical challenges of building a hardwareโsoftware integrated solution for agriculture.
๐ค Developing AI-Based Crop Detection
Alongside the hardware, we developed an AI-based crop detection component that analyzes plant images to help identify possible crop diseases and visible crop issues.
Our vision was to combine sensor readings and AI-driven analysis to move toward a smarter farming system that could support early detection, better resource management, and timely decision-making.
๐ฑ What We Envisioned with VASUDHA
Our proposed platform brings together several important aspects of smart farming:
- ๐ฟ Soil moisture and environmental condition monitoring
- ๐ง Data-informed irrigation recommendations
- ๐ AI-assisted crop disease detection
- ๐ฆ๏ธ Awareness of weather and climate-related risks
- ๐ Intelligent insights to support farmers' decisions
The larger goal was to explore how electronics, embedded systems, and artificial intelligence could work together to address real-world agricultural
VASUDHA has been a valuable step in my journey of learning, building, and innovating. This experience has strengthened my passion for combining electronics and AI to solve real-world challenges. And this is just the beginning! ๐
