🌱How GAP Training & Fruit Trees Distributions Are Transforming Dharmapuri and Attur’s Fairtrade Cotton Farms in Tamil Nadu
Climate change, soil degradation, and biodiversity loss are reshaping the future of agriculture. To help farmers adapt, Fairtrade NAPP delivered an intensive Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) training for 27 farmers and 4 ICS staff from the Virutcham Ecofarming Farmers Association (Alwar Organic Company) in Dharmapuri and Attur regions, Tamil Nadu.
Through sessions on environmental management, biodiversity protection, climate resilience, IPM, fertilizer management, chemical safety, and PML documentation, farmers strengthened their technical skills and understanding of sustainable farm management.
🌿 Hands-on learning included pit preparation, proper sapling placement, organic manure application, and after-care techniques.
A key highlight of the program was the distribution of 700 mango and guava tree saplings to farmer members, a strategic initiative designed to address multiple community needs at once- long-term livelihood support, climate resilience, improving household nutrition, and diversifying income opportunities
Farmers welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm—many planted their saplings the same day and committed to ensuring zero mortality.
This program marks a meaningful step toward future-ready, climate-smart cotton farming in Dharmapuri.
A follow-up visit scheduled for January–February will help assess sapling survival, establishment, and overall project progress
