On enchaîne.

At a moment when the world looks toward COP30 and demands real action on sustainability, this article from my professor José Luiz Tejon Megido brings timely, sharp and necessary insights about the future of global food systems. It is absolutely worth reading (use any online translation platform if needed): https://lnkd.in/gFWZvwKv In the context of climate pressure, food-security concerns and the need for resilient supply chains, Brazil and Canada stand out as two countries that could build one of the most strategic agrifood partnerships of this decade. And accelerating a Canada–Mercosur Trade Agreement is no longer optional: It is urgent, beneficial and mutually reinforcing. Why is Brazil essential for Canada’s food security ? Brazil has consolidated itself as a global food powerhouse, not just by scale, but through science. Institutions like Embrapa - Brazil’s public agricultural research corporation - have transformed agriculture by creating technologies for tropical soils, conserving biodiversity, and increasing productivity with sustainability at the center. For decades, Embrapa has: • adapted crops to tropical conditions • expanded cultivable areas responsibly • increased productivity without proportional expansion of land • developed sustainable systems in livestock, forestry and grains This scientific foundation makes Brazil a stable, high-volume, climate-diverse supplier, a strategic asset for Canada as global food systems grow more fragile. Why Canada matters for Brazil and Mercosur ? Canada is a sophisticated, stable and innovation-driven market that aligns perfectly with Brazil’s agrifood strengths. It offers: • strong demand for high-quality, sustainable food • complementary trade in fertilizers, machinery, agritech and clean technologies • a safe, predictable environment for long-term agribusiness partnerships • diversification beyond traditional US and EU markets The bilateral trade foundation is already strong, but with the right agreement, the potential multiplies — especially for processed foods, proteins, plant-based innovations, grains and fruit. Why is accelerating the Canada–Mercosur Trade Agreement urgent ? In a world facing climate risks, geopolitical uncertainty and volatile supply chains, predictable and transparent trade frameworks are more important than ever. A modernized agreement would: • reduce barriers • create investment confidence • strengthen agrifood resilience for Canada • open new premium markets for Brazil and Mercosur • foster cooperation in sustainability, science and innovation This is the kind of bilateral strategy that aligns with the global agenda of COP30: sustainability, food security and inclusive economic development. #CanadaBrazil #Mercosur #FoodSecurity #AgriFood #Sustainability #COP30 #Agritech #Embrapa #GlobalTrade #Innovation #CanadaTrade #FoodSystems #ClimateResilience #AgroSustentavel #BilateralRelations #CPTPP #SupplyChainResilience #EconomicDevelopment

On the ground in Freetown: our CEO is working with UNDP and the Sierra Leone Ministry of Finance on a blended-finance approach to unlock capital for clean-technology SMEs. The end goal for all our endeavours is simple, to make capital so that technology that make a difference, like solar pumps, cold rooms, and productive power can scale faster. We’re pushing for practical tools: first-loss cushions, FX protections, and bank-grade processes built for speed. If you’re a clean-tech operator in Sierra Leone, let’s talk. #BlendedFinance #SierraLeone #CleanTech #Solar #Agritech #SMEs #EnergyAccess

Right then. Watch party with the wonderful Laura Whyte of Whyfield and hosted by the fabulous Venton Ltd Conference Centre complete. Here's my initial takeaway from the #Budget and what it means for #Cornwall. Last year I was asking the Chancellor whether they even knew where Cornwall was. This year, Cornwall is unmistakably on the map. The Budget name checked us repeatedly and delivered a £30 million Kernow Industrial Fund. Agritech, marine and critical minerals are front and centre, a clear nod to the assets we have been shouting about for years. But let me be clear. Good money spent badly is as bad as no money at all. If this fund is going to work, business and Cornwall Council need to be working together, sleeves rolled up, making sure every pound is invested wisely and works as hard as every Cornish business already does. There is also funding earmarked for a new neighbourhood health centre in Truro and business rates will remain in Cornwall Council’s coffers. Also of note is a £48 million uplift in planning capacity nationally, so we might finally start cutting through the red tape that has kept infrastructure projects crawling along at a glacial pace. Then there is the wider picture. Leaders across Cornwall will now be reaching for their calculators. A rising national living wage, a two point jump on capital gains tax for dividends and the halving of Employee Ownership Trust CGT relief will have entrepreneurs and founders scribbling exit plans and cashflow forecasts long into the night. And for the high street, let us not sugarcoat it. Hospitality and retail businesses still see no VAT relief and business rates support that barely dents the pressure they face daily. Tough does not begin to cover it. What will be interesting is whether this Budget unlocks more scale-up capital. British ISA changes, strengthened venture schemes, entrepreneurial incentives and reforms to listings and tax certainty all hint at a country trying to get its savings and pensions working for its own businesses. If that turns into real capital flowing into Cornish firms, then we will be getting somewhere. Here is the big takeaway. Between the Critical Minerals Strategy and now the Budget, Cornwall has finally entered the Westminster lexicon, not as a charity case, but as a destination for investment and opportunity. We have been saying it for years. Now the language is shifting our way. But opportunity without discipline is noise. Investment only matters if it is channelled into commercially astute projects that fit Cornwall’s long-term economic future. Accountants, financial planners, MDs and lowly Chamber of Commerce CEOs across the Duchy will now be poring over the details, working through the ups, the downs and the unintended consequences.
