Sharing a proud moment from my Smart India Hackathon journey I recently realised I never posted this achievement on LinkedIn — but this experience truly deserves to be here. Our team NIRMAAN was shortlisted in the Top 50 during the Internal Hackathon for SIH 2025. I had the opportunity to lead a dedicated team: Karan Mate, Ritisha Shinde, Priya Prasad, Suhani Arjun, and Sarvesh Dubey. Our problem statement was “AI-based Farmer Query Support and Advisory System,” for which we developed our prototype KrishiSathi. It is designed to support farmers by answering their queries and providing advisory assistance through AI. We built the initial version during the hackathon and are continuing to refine it further. Precision-grown seedlings thriving in structured nursery trays — each cell filled with a balanced mix of cocopeat and nutrient-rich growing media. Consistent moisture management, controlled light, and ideal spacing ensure uniform germination and strong root development. These early stages reflect how the right substrate, hygiene, and nursery practices directly shape healthy and productive crops. Investing in quality seedlings is the foundation of high-yield farming.🍁☘️ From Seed to Strong Seedling — 1. Start with intent: choose the right seed Select certified, high-vigour seed suited to your climate and market. Seed genetics determine early vigor and later yield — don’t treat seed as a commodity. 2. Prepare a predictable substrate We use a well-drained, uniform mix (cocopeat + small proportion compost / perlite) so moisture and aeration are consistent across every plug cell. Uniform substrate = uniform germination. 3. Precision sowing for even stands Sow at the right depth and density for the crop. One seed per cell (or thinned to one) reduces competition, disease risk, and variability in growth. 4. Controlled moisture, not flooding Maintain even moisture — damp but not waterlogged. Over-watering softens stems and invites damping-off; under-watering stalls germination. Use misting or capillary watering for consistency. 5. Optimize light and temperature Provide bright, diffused light and stable temperatures in the seedling stage. Light intensity and daylength influence stem thickening and leaf development — early light control prevents leggy, weak seedlings. 6. Gentle air movement & hygiene Gentle ventilation strengthens stems and lowers humidity pockets that lead to fungal problems. Clean trays and sanitized tools reduce pathogens at the earliest stage. 7. Nutrient strategy & monitoring Start with a low-EC starter nutrient once true leaves appear. Monitor colour and growth rate daily; correct deficiencies early to avoid irreversible setbacks. 8. Timely hardening & transplant readiness Harden off seedlings by gradually increasing light and lowering water a few days before transplant. Transplant when roots have filled the cell and plants show robust, compact growth. Why these steps matter Seedlings are an investment — each healthy plug reduces losses, shortens field establishment time, and improves uniformity at harvest. Systematic nursery practice increases predictability, reduces inputs downstream, and protects crop quality from day one.
