Have you ever needed to deploy a robot in a field, only to discover that a mapping task had to be completed first? That is exactly the kind of challenge the VISTA project set out to address. On 5 August, at JoJo's Vineyard & The Digital Vineyard, the UK Agri-Tech Centre and Vinescapes brought together representatives from Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, growers and technology service providers to demonstrate how shared digital infrastructure can make field-robot deployment faster and simpler. Funded by Innovate UK and led by Outfield Technologies to create a common, shareable interoperability layer, VISTA enables infrastructure maps to be stored and exchanged between service providers—even when each system speaks a different technical language or uses a different data model. During the event, we demonstrated how a handheld device can be used to register a farm through AGRIDS (https://agrids.xyz/), the software we developed at the Lincoln Centre for Autonomous Systems (L-CAS) at the University of Lincoln, thereby digitalising the site in just a few minutes. A navigation map was then generated online and exported via API to ANTOBOT, ready to support robot deployment. And because demonstrations always come with a few surprises, we also improvised communication with the spraying UAV provided on site by PrecisionAgri Drones (Mark Hill). The resulting export was a huge success! 🚁 This is the value of VISTA and AGRIDS: reducing the friction between farm mapping, digital infrastructure and robotic operations, while helping different technologies work together in the field. With VISTA coming to an end in just a few weeks, we are excited to explore what else can be achieved with this software. From agricultural roots in Punjab to building an AI solution in Manitoba — this one felt especially meaningful. 🌾 A few days later, I’m still thinking about what an incredible experience the AccelR8 Prairie AI Hackathon 2026 was. Growing up with roots in Punjab and coming from agricultural families, agriculture has always been more than just an industry to us. So when we saw the Smart Farming Advisor challenge, my teammate Amanjot Kaur and I knew we wanted to take it on. In one intense day, we built and pitched FarmPilot AI — our vision for an AI-powered decision intelligence platform that helps farmers make better decisions around irrigation, fertilizer, planting, and farm planning. And we were incredibly grateful to be named 🥈 1st Runner-Up! A few things I learned: 🌱 Start with the problem, not the technology. 🤝 Good ideas become better through collaboration. 🧠 Trust matters as much as intelligence. 🎤 A good solution still needs a good story. We learned that solving the problem is only half the job. You also have to make people understand why it matters. A huge thank you to the mentors and volunteers who made the day so well organized. The support throughout the event was incredible — from guidance during ideation to helping teams stay on track when the clock was running out. Thank you to the judges Adam Gerhard, Ray Hope, Baltej Singh Rupal, Rolf Oswald, and Drew Carmichael for the thoughtful questions and feedback. I’m pleased to share my Week 6 project, developed as part of the Machine Learning Internship Program at ALGO HUB. The project focuses on developing an end-to-end Fertilizer Recommendation System that uses soil, crop, and environmental data to provide data-driven fertilizer recommendations. As part of the development process, I analyzed a 10,000-record dataset covering 7 fertilizer categories and trained and evaluated Random Forest, KNN, and XGBoost models. Random Forest achieved 87.5% accuracy and was selected as the final model. The solution was then deployed as a complete application using FastAPI for the backend and Streamlit for the frontend, with the system providing the top three fertilizer recommendations along with confidence scores. 🌱♻️🌾 Circular Bioeconomy in Agriculture: Turning Farm Waste into New Resources 🌾♻️🌱 A circular bioeconomy in agriculture combines the principles of the circular economy with biological resources. Instead of following a linear model of produce → use → waste, it aims to reuse, recover, recycle, and regenerate biological materials so that farm residues and by-products become valuable inputs for new agricultural or industrial processes. For example, crop residues can be converted into compost, biochar, animal feed, biogas, biofertilizers, biomaterials, or bio-based chemicals, allowing nutrients and resources to remain within the production system. 🌱 Key Applications: ✅ Converting crop residues into compost and biofertilizers ✅ Producing biogas and bioenergy from manure and organic waste ✅ Using agricultural residues to produce biochar ✅ Recycling nutrients back into agricultural soils ✅ Converting food-processing by-products into animal feed ✅ Producing bioplastics, natural fibers, and other biomaterials ✅ Recovering water and nutrients from agricultural and food-processing systems 🔄 The Circular Model: Crops → Residues & By-products → Recovery & Processing → Bio-based Products → Nutrients & Resources → Back to the Farm 🚜 The Way Forward: ✔️ Develop decentralized biogas, composting, and biochar systems ✔️ Improve technologies for recovering nutrients from agricultural waste ✔️ Integrate livestock, crop production, aquaculture, and agroforestry into circular systems ✔️ Use AI and digital technologies to optimize resource flows and waste management ✔️ Create markets for bio-based products and agricultural by-products ✔️ Support farmers and rural entrepreneurs through finance, training, and policy incentives ✔️ Measure environmental benefits such as reduced emissions, improved soil health, and lower waste The circular bioeconomy can transform agriculture from a resource-consuming system into a resource-regenerating system. Nimirndhu Nil Hackathon – Ideation Camp Presented: Automated Onion Storage Monitoring and Control System 🚀 I am pleased to share that I participated in the “Nimirndhu Nil” Hackathon – Ideation Camp, organized by the Entrepreneurship Development and Innovation Institute Tamil Nadu under the Tamil Nadu Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Program (TNYEDP) on 15 June 2026. During the camp, I presented our project titled “Automated Onion Storage Monitoring and Control System for Improved Shelf Life and Reduced Spoilage.” The project focuses on reducing post-harvest onion losses through IoT-based real-time monitoring and automated environmental control, offering a cost-effective and scalable solution for farmers. 🔍 Key Features Presented 🔹 Real-time temperature and humidity monitoring 🔹 Automated ventilation and fan control 🔹 Remote monitoring through an IoT dashboard 🔹 Improved onion shelf life 🔹 Reduced spoilage and storage losses Participating in this ideation camp provided valuable exposure to entrepreneurship, business model thinking, and innovation-driven problem solving. It was an excellent opportunity to receive feedback from mentors and industry experts on the scalability and impact of the solution.
