🌱 Turning a Real Agricultural Challenge into a Digital Solution | ApnaMandi AI
On 15th September 2026, I had the opportunity to participate in the Internal Hackathon for Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2026 at Deccan Education Society’s Institute of Management Development and Research (IMDR), Pune .
Our team VisionX presented ApnaMandi AI, a software solution developed around SIH 2026 Problem Statement SIH260033 — “Multiple intermediaries reduce farmers' earnings and increase consumer prices.”
💡 What is ApnaMandi AI?
ApnaMandi AI is an AI-powered digital marketplace designed to connect farmers/FPOs directly with mandis, retailers, restaurants, processors and bulk buyers.
The key idea is simple:
Don't just look at the highest quoted price — look at the highest NET REALIZATION for the farmer. 🌾
A farmer can enter the crop, quantity and location, after which the platform compares available buyer/mandi offers and considers associated transportation and logistics costs.
For example:
₹30/kg selling price − ₹5 transport = ₹25/kg net realization
while
₹28/kg selling price − ₹1 transport = ₹27/kg net realization
In this case, the second buyer provides the farmer with the better actual return, despite offering a lower quoted price.
The platform also proposes AI-based demand and price forecasting, buyer/market ranking, order matching and pooled delivery optimization to help make the selling process more efficient.

The solution aims to:
🌾 Improve farmers' market visibility and net realization
🤝 Reduce unnecessary intermediary layers
📊 Enable better price discovery and data-driven decisions
🚚 Make logistics costs visible before a selling decision
💰 Reduce avoidable logistics costs
🌱 Support pooled shipments and route optimization
The broader impact we identified includes stronger farmer bargaining power, better sourcing for buyers, improved market efficiency and potentially reduced empty trips, fuel use and emissions.
For me, the hackathon was more than just presenting an application. It was about understanding a real-world problem, breaking it down, working as a team, and converting an idea into a practical technology-driven solution.
