🌱🔬 Le laser, un nouvel outil pour la protection des cultures ? L’utilisation du laser en agriculture devient progressivement une réalité. En Chine, plusieurs technologies associent intelligence artificielle, vision par ordinateur et laser pour cibler avec précision les mauvaises herbes, et potentiellement certains insectes ravageurs. L’application la plus avancée concerne aujourd’hui le désherbage au laser. Des robots équipés de caméras identifient les adventices au milieu des cultures, déterminent leur position puis dirigent un faisceau laser afin de les détruire localement, sans pulvérisation d’herbicide. La société chinoise HGTECH a notamment développé un LaserWeeder dont certaines versions peuvent intégrer jusqu’à 32 unités laser, avec des performances annoncées atteignant 320 000 adventices par heure. 🔬 Et pour les insectes ? Le défi est plus complexe : il faut détecter l’insecte en vol, suivre sa trajectoire, déterminer s’il appartient à une espèce nuisible puis le cibler en quelques fractions de seconde. Le système expérimental Photonic Fence, présenté dans Scientific Reports, a montré que cette approche est techniquement possible. Il a notamment été testé sur Diaphorina citri, psylle vecteur des bactéries associées au Huanglongbing (HLB) des agrumes. Le principe pourrait se résumer ainsi : Détecter → Identifier → Décider → Cibler 🎯 L’objectif n’est donc plus nécessairement de traiter toute une parcelle, mais d’intervenir uniquement sur l’organisme ciblé. 🌿 À terme, ces technologies pourraient présenter un intérêt particulier pour les serres, pépinières, vergers et cultures à forte valeur ajoutée, notamment dans les stratégies de lutte intégrée. ⚠️ Il faut néanmoins distinguer les niveaux de maturité : le désherbage au laser est déjà relativement avancé, tandis que la lutte contre les insectes par laser reste encore une technologie émergente nécessitant davantage de validations en conditions agricoles réelles. 🌍 Une évolution intéressante de la Plant Protection vers la Precision Plant Protection. 📚 Sources : Scientific Reports – Nature : https://lnkd.in/ePGaekgU People’s Daily : https://lnkd.in/eS9xMCQG #AgricultureDePrécision #ProtectionDesCultures #AgTech #IntelligenceArtificielle #IPM

The teams that place are the ones that can execute technically with satellite data at scale. We placed Top 3. What the judges evaluated: the technical execution of deforestation detection using satellite-grade spatial data — automatically, at scale, without human review. Specifically: identifying deforestation events post-December 2020, which is the exact standard the EU's EUDR regulation requires for supply chain compliance. That capability isn't a separate product. It's the foundation of how every farm enters Harvest 20. Before any capital is involved, every farm is checked against that data. A farm with deforestation events post-2020 doesn't pass. No exceptions. The logic is that modern horticulture is doing what factories were supposed to do. 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐝-𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐬, 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 and 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 make these operations look more like industrial plants than traditional farms — an "𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬." Fruit and nuts have overtaken cocoa as Africa's top agricultural export, reversing decades of colonial-era single-crop dependency. The examples stack up. 𝐙𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐰𝐞'𝐬 𝐛𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 run on imported genetics and tunnel covers timed to hit the gap between US and Peruvian harvest seasons. 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐚 together supply roughly 8% of the world's cut flowers. Tropical fruit exports — avocados, mangoes, pineapples — have more than tripled continent-wide in ten years, the fastest growth of any region. And in May 2026, 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧 as the world's largest citrus exporter. The spillovers resemble those long claimed for manufacturing: new agritech startups, dried-snack processing lines, cold-chain infrastructure repurposed for herbs and vegetables. But the constraints are familiar too — bad roads, clogged ports and in Ethiopia's case, flower lorries now facing armed bandits. 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚'𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥 on African imports this year has opened a new market, though food-safety and plant-health rules remain a harder barrier than tariffs ever were. From Nairobi hosting the World Farmers Organisation for the first time on African soil, to a digital agriculture revolution reaching 7.2M+ registered farmers, here is what is driving the transformation: 1. AI Goes Farm-Ready: The government launched the ADAPT Kenya Project with Microsoft, using AI and azure-powered chatbots for pest diagnostics and crop advisory. FarmBeats is bringing edge computing and drone analytics to smallholders. 2. Avocado Green Gold: Kenya is Africa top avocado producer. Exports projected to recover 7.4% to 130,000 tonnes. But quality discipline is now the focus — mandatory packhouse inspections, traceability, and license revocations for immature fruit harvesting. The lesson: volume wins markets, quality keeps them. 3. Coffee Golden Run: A global supply squeeze has pushed Kenyan micro-lot prices to USD 120/kg (from USD 35 in 2024). Production is rebounding to 940,000 bags for 2026/27. Direct digital auctions are connecting growers to buyers faster than ever. 4. Agritech Connecting the Chain: Twiga Foods now links 17,000+ farmers to 8,000+ urban vendors, paying 20-40% more than traditional brokers and cutting food waste by 50%. 5. Climate Finance Flowing: Kenya plans KSh 100 billion (USD 772M) in green and climate bonds by 2027. Meanwhile, horticulture surged 13.8% even as drought-hit wheat (-18.2%) and sugarcane (-24.7%). 6. The Resilience Playbook: When rains fail, the whole economy slows (ag growth dropped to 3% in 2025). But digital registration (KIAMIS), AI advisory, and direct-market linkages are building the infrastructure for resilience.
