Nvidia just bought Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. Here's why smallholder farmers should care. The AI quietly transforming African agriculture, crop disease detection from a phone photo, yield prediction from satellite imagery, credit scoring for farmers with no bank statements, mostly runs on open-source models. Models a small team can download, fine-tune on local crops and local data, and deploy without a Silicon Valley budget. Hugging Face was the front door to all of that. Now the world's biggest chipmaker owns it. Maybe nothing changes. Nvidia profits when more people build. But agriculture in emerging markets has learned this lesson before with seeds and fertilizer: when the inputs get consolidated, the smallest players pay the price. For those of us building AI for smallholder finance, the takeaway is clear: Fine-tune and own your models. A crop-yield model trained on Ethiopian teff or Kenyan maize is an asset no acquisition can take from you. The real moat was never the base model, it's the local data and the trust of the farmers behind it. The next decade of agricultural AI in Africa shouldn't depend on decisions made in a boardroom in Santa Clara. #AgriTech #AI #FinancialInclusion #Smallholders #Africa #AgriFinance

🍫 Endophytic fungi show promise for protecting cacao crops and chocolate quality 🌱🔬 A recent review finds that endophytic fungi, particularly Trichoderma and Clonostachysspecies, show measurable potential to control the pod diseases that devastate global cacao harvests. Cocoa farming faces persistent losses from black pod rot and frosty pod rot, diseases that destroy yield and degrade bean chemistry before harvest even begins. Current management leans heavily on fungicides, but cost, regulatory pressure, and food-safety concerns across supply chains have pushed the industry to look for #biocontrol alternatives, opening real commercial space for fungal-based crop protection in one of the world's most valuable soft commodities. Researchers at Ecuador's Escuela Politécnica Nacional and ESPOL synthesised the evidence on how these fungi work. Trichoderma species act through at least four mechanisms: colonising pod surfaces to physically exclude pathogens, producing antimicrobial metabolites, directly parasitising disease-causing fungi, and priming the cacao plant's own immune defences. In field trials, an oil-based Trichoderma asperellum formulation matched chemical fungicide performance under heavy disease pressure, a meaningful signal for #cropprotection developers eyeing registration pathways. The commercial case remains partial though. No study has yet directly linked field-level biocontrol to improved fermentation, flavour development, or reduced #mycotoxin contamination in finished beans, and some candidate fungi carry their own toxin risks requiring careful screening. The authors call for longitudinal studies tracking treated cacao from field to bean. For a #cocoasupplychain under mounting agronomic and regulatory pressure, endophytic fungi represent a scientifically credible, still-unproven lever worth watching closely.

#transportroutier #transport https://lnkd.in/dgQE2UYK

Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to work with founders, investors, growers and commercial teams across the agrifood sector. It’s given me a real insight into where innovation is succeeding—and where it’s getting stuck. The UK has no shortage of brilliant ideas. The challenge is turning them into commercially successful businesses. I’ve met some brilliant founders with fantastic technology who are looking for support in turning that innovation into commercial success—finding the right customers, navigating procurement and building meaningful market traction. At the same time, investors are increasingly focused on customer adoption and scalable routes to market, not just great technology Seeing those challenges from both the supply and demand side has made me realise where I can add the most value. So, Juster AgriConsult is evolving. Going forward, my focus will be on helping innovative agrifood and agritech businesses accelerate commercial growth—whether that’s refining a go-to-market strategy, opening doors to strategic customers and partners, or helping founders position their business for investment and long-term success. I’m particularly excited to work with businesses developing technologies that improve food security, strengthen supply chains and make our food system more resilient. For me, innovation only creates impact when it reaches the people who need it. That’s the gap I want Juster AgriConsult to help close. I’m looking forward to working with more founders, investors and organisations that share that ambition. #AgriTech #Agrifood #Commercialisation #Founders #VentureCapital #RouteToMarket #FoodInnovation #FoodSecurity #InnovationEcosystem #BusinessGrowth #ClimateTech #TechForGood

Sustainable Fertilization & Soil Health: From NPK to Nano & Bio-Implications for Carbon Markets For decades, farming has asked one dominant question: how much NPK should be added? Link: https://lnkd.in/gKeBBMnK But soil is not simply a container for fertiliser. It is a living system involving microbes, fungi, organic matter, water, minerals and carbon. This newsletter explores the movement from input-heavy fertilisation towards biofertilisers, biostimulants, nano solutions, biochar and measurable soil-health systems-and asks whether carbon markets are ready to reward real improvements on the ground. We've celebrated QR codes, merchant payments, digital wallets, and urban convenience. It has been an extraordinary success story. But there's another India that fintech hasn't fully served yet. The India where over half the population is connected to agriculture. The next phase of fintech growth shouldn't just be about helping consumers split restaurant bills or making checkout faster. It should be about making agriculture more efficient, transparent, and financially connected. A farmer's journey isn't a single payment. It's a chain of transactions, buying seeds, fertilizers, equipment, accessing credit, receiving subsidies, paying labour, selling produce, settling transport costs, receiving payments from buyers, and managing seasonal cash flows. #Fintech #AgriTech #Agriculture #DigitalPayments #FinancialInclusion #UPI #EmbeddedFinance #Innovation #Startups #India #RuralEconomy #DigitalInfrastructure #Farmers #AgriMarketplace #VIYONAFintech
