🚨 90% of farmers in India are facing a labour shortage Rural-to-urban migration is accelerating fast—nearly 19% today, and projected to push over 40% of our population into cities by 2030 (from 34% just a few years ago). As millions move in search of stable income, farm labor availability has dropped by nearly 25% in 2025, putting pressure on: ⏳ Crop timelines 💰 Farming costs 🌾 National food security Meanwhile: 📈 Labor wages are rising sharply 🚜 Mechanization remains slower than global benchmarks 👴 The average farmer is aging, as youth choose city jobs If these trends continue, by 2035, India may face: ❗ Serious seasonal labor shortages ❗ Increased cost of cultivation ❗ Reduced rural income stability ❗ Threats to food production resilience But this future is not fixed. We can reshape it — starting now. 🌱 Strengthening rural livelihoods 🤝 Enabling resource-sharing models like Raithan 🚜 Increasing access to mechanization + digital service platforms 🎓 Upskilling rural youth for agri-service careers These are the steps that keep farming viable, villages strong, and families together. It’s time to invest in rural futures that inspire our youth to stay, contribute, and thrive. 🌾 #Raithan #RuralRevival #FarmersFirst #FoodSecurity #AgriTech #LaborGap #SustainableFarming #FutureOfAgriculture #RuralYouth #SmartFarming #India2035

I’m pleased to share our new paper published in the SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics proceedings: “The role of agricultural advisory services in facilitating the adoption of new technologies by young farmers in the municipality of Serres.” In this work we analyse how advisory services — as a core element of local AKIS — can accelerate young farmers’ uptake of precision and digital tools. Our findings highlight that technical training alone is not enough: effective adoption requires context-sensitive advice, trustful advisor–farmer relationships, and targeted support that reduces cost and perceived risk for young producers. These insights have direct implications for advisory organizations, policymakers designing CAP-linked measures, and anyone working on generational renewal in agriculture. A big thank you to my co-authors SPIRIDON KANAKARIS, Georgios Papadavid (PhD) and everyone who contributed their time and knowledge. If you’re working on advisory systems, digital agriculture or youth engagement in rural areas, I’d love to connect and exchange ideas. Full text in the 1st comment! Proven returns, poor adoption — the paradox of smallholder technologies I have been thinking about this a lot lately, if a technology delivers ROI, why does it still struggle to reach small and marginal farmers? Three factors I keep coming.. 1. The cost of customer acquisition is unusually high. Even with proven ROI, farmers tend to “wait and watch” — hoping something or the other will bring support. That means longer sales cycles, more follow-ups, and higher logistics costs. In many cases, customer acquisition alone eats up more than 30% of the product cost — something most early-stage startups can’t sustain. 2. Climate risk keeps ROI uncertain. Even if a product pays back in three to four crop cycles on paper, one bad season can break the chain. Climate variability can ruin yields, affect repayments, and lower credit scores, even when a credit layer is introduced to increase adoption, which makes the situation even more complex. Unless we build in some support system, the true risk-adjusted ROI will not look viable for smallholders. 3. Distorted markets need Distorted Pricing Subsidies have shaped how farmers make decisions. When you enter such a market, normal pricing logic doesn’t work. You almost need to enter with a distorted pricing strategy for a distorted market — one that acknowledges how subsidy expectations drive adoption behavior. A strategy that recognises subsidy-shaped expectations is not distortion. It is realism. When we factor in climate risk, ROI stretches out. To keep it attractive, we need some shared cushion — so that the  break even looks convincing, even under uncertainty. Because in markets shaped by subsidies and shocks, pure market play often isn’t enough. Sometimes, in a market, you really do need a distorted strategy — at least until the system stabilizes.
